what did he see in lil red
i have never herd of Russel Bellar but after reading the thread about his wins from barnyard it got me wondering what did he see that others didnot.i know it takes expereance to be good at anything but i like to try and cheat time when ever i can.so what are the winners looking for and how long do you look in a dog.i am not looking for a breed war i want to know what we are looking for in a dog that gives a person the convedence to say he is going to make it past just average.
I will tell you why most dogs don't make it past average.
Most people are to lazy. Hunting a good young dog that is showing lots of promise one or two nights a week just isn't going to cut it.
Also many think they can hunt their dog with other dogs all the time then expect them to be independant, it just doesn't happen.

John, I'd say you came as close to hitting the nail on the head as could be. It also don't hurt to have the funds to purchase one even though paying a lot of money doesn't guarantee you'll get that dog with the extra your talking about.
Probably the number one thing is they find a dog that doesn't make mistakes. And they don't accept any excuses.
After that , you can train for everything else.
You can make a dog independant , but you can't make them accurate!
You can stop them from running trash , but you can't make them want to tree a coon.
You can teach them to lead , but you can't make them go hunting.
And they probably don't waste time trying !

I would think Russ has likely had several over the years that didn't find a home with him, or at least he looked at and turned down. Who owns or trains a dog usually has everthing to do with the final outcome because the potentially best dog there ever was or ever will be could waste away on a chain or in a kennel and never learn to be anything. Russ may be able to tell you exactlly what he sees in a dog or it may be something that appeals to him that he can't put into words but it apparently works very well for him. Hunts and shows or whatever are won by what you do the other 6 days of the week.
i am scared it is going to be just like every thing else in life that cant be told or explained.and if thats so i guess its to the woods with what is on the lead now and put the hours and years the trainers that came before us did.it does not take long to see if it is good trainers or good handlers that are behind a dog.i have some respect for both, but the trainers that are putting the time in and know how to get what all of us want,i have the most respect for.and the longer i do,see and hear the easyer it is to see what is happening!!
If you are wanting opinions you can take this one to the bank you will go through alot of dogs trying to find this,but if you want to win all you need is a coondog a sure enough coondog. Not a me you too that looks like a coondog but a dog that trees coon in any terrain and any weather by hisself. You will not get this with him on the chain and you wont learn your dog with him on it either. Hunt hard-- coondog---- know your dog----know the rules--

I asked Russ to his face about two weeks ago that very same question.
He won't divulge all of the traits that he looks for, but his NUMBER ONE TRAIT that he looks for is "nose"..... If a dog doesn't have a good nose...it won't last long at Bellars.

Consistency, go hunting every time, strike, track with some speed, tree, stay treed and #1 have the bacon shakin.....you find that and you'll win a bunch of casts! The 3 best dogs I've ever owned were just consistent, nothin flashy! Hard to beat 2 lookin down!!!

Russ Bellar hunts and hunts hard. I know from talking to Bryan Whitted that before the big ones Mr. Bellar spends teh time in the woods getting them right. A man can train a dog to do alot if they are #1 accurate, #2 decently intellegent #3 trainable and #4 has the heart and deisre to please. MAny of the big winners are "man made" but they have to have the tangibles to get started

This thing with little red is funny to me. Give this red hound some credit ,she sure has turned the coon huntin world upside down. Boys , we need to remember [ if we are honest] that we have been beat by different breeds [ at least I have] at one time or another. We all need to grow up and remember color dont tree coons, coon dogs tree coons!
