Ant proof?

I am having a problem with ants and dog food in the bowl.I need some idea's,I got pups to,tried powder but that ain't stopping them.Thanks Heath

Put some dish detergent around the bottom of bowl makes it too slick for the ants to climb. have to do it every day though. Also don't leave any left over feed in the bowl give em about 10 min to eat then pull the bowl.

I mix Malithon and spray around the pen and any ants I see. I do it all summer till they are gone. Sevin dust and lime around the outside of the pen, anything that will kill. Hi yield makes some stinky white powder that I can't remember the name of that I put on the ant hills, the name of it starts with the letter "A", I never can remember the name of it. It comes in a metal can with a foil seal. I poke a hole in the foil seal to sprinkle over the hills and mounds. It's the best fire ant killer I have found. It will also mix with water so it can be sprayed. Consistency is the key.

HOME DEFENSE

Wal Mart sells a spray that I believe is called Home Defense. I learned about this from an exterminator friend. It's in a gallon plastic container with a pump action nozzle. Put the nozzle on STREAM and only spray the PERIMETER of whatever you want to keep free of ants. Just spray a line around whatever bowl or container you want to protect - don't put it in or on the bowl. I use it around the edges of my concrete kennels and the outside pens, and put a few squirts in the center of dirt pens. If you are putting it where the dogs walk, just wait for the streamed area to dry. The advantage of this is - IT WORKS. And it lasts for at least 3 months outside unless there's a heavy rain. I also put it around the perimeter of my house to keep it insect free. We have a vicious fire ant and every other kind of ant & insect problem in Texas & this has made my life much easier.

T-post

The thing I have found to do if you have an automatic feeder is to put two t-post in the ground a little wider than the feeder. Then run a bar or even another t-post between to keep them from pulling together. Then just run a wire to hang the feeder on that keeps the bottom of the feeder about 6 inches off the ground. Spray a little grass killer or anything else that will kill grass around the bottom on the ground and if you then have any problems just have to spray around the t-post. Normally the ants never know it's there.

The only thing that works for me is to feed them what they normally eat in a pan and they eat it immediatly. If they don't eat it right then I remove it before ants get in it. I do not like to use chemicals in my dog pens.

With Home Defense you spray the PERIMETER of the pen - maybe I should have stated OUTSIDE the area you want to keep ant free. I don't like MY dogs on chemials either. That's the reason for using the STREAM setting on the nozzle instead of spray so it doesn't contaminate bowls & feeders.

heard that corn meal they can't digest an when eaten kills em..spread some around ant hill an they carry it into nest..gonna try it myself this summer.

Ants in feed

Try mounting your feeder on wall or post , BUT and this the big BUT,
mount it off off wall or post by a couple of inches.. Use a small piece of copper pipe to hold off, using screws or bolts... Apply plain old axle grease on copper piping , NO MORE ANTS... Just make sure nothing touchs feeder BUT where piping is with grease... Once maybe twice a year is all it takes..... try it you'll like it ....
