Rules Question (I'm bored)

Four dog cast. On the first dump, all dogs are cast, one dog doesn't go hunting well and hunts close to the cast, coming in and out. No dogs are struck. While waiting in the dark after what seems to be an eternity of silence, something is heard rustling through the leaves nearby just out of sight. The dog that doesn't go hunting is beside the cast. It's hair bristles up on it's back and it starts barking in the direction of the "mysterious" animal that approaches.

What do we do besides "shoot the stupid thing"?

im really not sure , but i do have to admit that your explination made me laugh. as i have had that happen before. ( it was a cow btw)

I would venture to say though that since you could SEE the close dog . who in good concience could minus that dog LOL
eventhough i know it would happen.

couple things at play...dog failing to hunt...and potentially off game or molesting livestock etc...

depends on the scenario and how it played out i guess...

Someone has to strike that dog on the third bark! Haha Then minus the fool for bringing a booger barking dog. LOL

If it a nitech cast I would scratch the dog for letting that creature get that close to me

well charles if its a nitech cast there been alot of cheatin to make a boogar barkin non huntin dog a nitech

with that being said dog has to be struck on the 3rd bark if he doesnt go in to atleast investigate the creature minus him for quittin track then if you see the creature minus him for runnin off game

i woldnt own a dog that sorry much less pay to enter it in a hunt but if it were mine you wouldnt have to do anything but write WD on the card bout the time he boogar barked

Very simple. The dog must be struck on or before the 3rd bark and then minused for babbling and then the same thing again every 3 barks until he is minused out.

I am continually amazed at the number of veteran UKC hunters that honestly believe you cannot minus a dog for babbling after the minute is up.

I've seen this happen twice in the last ten years in a Nite Hunt (and no, Charles, it was never my dog). The first time it happened, the rule was to scratch a dog for not being struck on or before the third bark. The dog barked about ten times right at our feet in the middle of a field. The handler looked around at the rest of the cast and said "what do I do? he is obviously not on track!" He was reminded of the rule, and scratched.

The second time was last month in a Reg. cast. The dog wasn't hunting, kept leaving the cast for a minute or so and coming back in. It wasn't making much of an attempt to hunt. The doge got spooked when a spectator who had been at the truck came in to the cast while we were all listening in the woods with our lights off. The dog bristled all up, and started barking at the noise of the spectator walking toward us with his light off. No one on the cast even said anything about the dog "opening where no track was apparent". The handler didn't strike the dog on or before the third bark, so he was awarded his strike points, then minused for the dog babbling.

Had a similar situation when I was judging, had one dog not hunting and the other 2 got treed. Non hunting dog followed us to the tree where he opened 4-5 times before getting there. I asked for a call on the dog and didn't get one I marked him down on the card and minused him. When I told the handler he said "You can't minus me he barking because he couldn't get across the ditch." This was a ditch about a 18" wide and 12" deep. Of course that was the only time this dog opened all night.

Alot of times on a reg cast people will put there dogs in hunts because they don't have anyone to hunt with and they are hoping there dog may learn something. I remember the first cast I put my young dog in I own now. The judge had to put the 30 on him the first drop. He went and tree'd the only coon we seen on the 2nd drop and I was scared he would leave and didn't call him right away and as soon as the first dog located with him the handler treed his dog won the cast with a first place win and made his dog ntch. There are lots of dogs out there that will beat your socks off that won't hunt with company. Had a bluetick gyp 15 years ago that would make me want to kill her on a nite hunt. she would get back in the dog box if I left it open. But when I took her alone she was a real deal coon dog. Best I have ever owned in my life. And I'm winning my far share with this young walker male I have now. Dogs have there ways don't ever judge one by seeing it one time.
