Bench Shows

What is the purpose of bench shows in a hunting breed?

Why doesn't she hunt?

She does when we are just pleasure hunting but doesn't like the comp stuff. If coon hunting happened during the day she would do it a Lot more. She not big on the late nights. Lol
she is a huge duck deer small game hunter predator, but again that all durring the day.

bench shows have been around longer than you have. The old timers liked to do something before heading out to the wood.
As I have spoke to several, these old timers like to be able to show their hounds off not only on conformation and prettiness but tracking power and on fast they drift a track in the field trials same with the water races.. Basically it was our fellow fathers brought in the bench shows.. Why change it?????
Then the registeries decided to have the bench or conformation to point out what dogs will last a full night of hunting without injuries with correct conformation. So, bench shows are great for those who do not competitive hunt or those who cannot that just want to go where the fellow hunters go.. Just BS..
I go personally to be able show off my hounds and basically go see fellow hunters and talk. hang out with friends and such..

Yeah, I couldn't believe he said it either.

Out loud anyway! lol

Hunted with a lot of good women hunters.

I am not a fan of bench shows either.

I think they serve only one purpose, and that is to raise more money.

They also are the bane of hunting breeds in my opinion.

benchshows serve no purpose in a hunting breed.

Well I got a few comments about that which I always have an opinion and comment on everything.
You may not be a fan of bench shows but the elderly and the kids are. Since they really cannot keep up with people in the woods maybe because of health problems. Maybe there is people out there that just pleasure hunt and dont comp hunt because ignorance and such.. and People that have the love of the hound and the fellowship. (Thank you Cleo, for bring that attention to me)
Yes, bench shows serve as money raiser but they also serve very well for fellowship keeping people in the sport. Young and old.
Well there is such people out there that just breed for the bench that is there choice not ours... for example I was at an event where such people could not believe I put an actually hunting dog on the bench that had torn and bitten ears... They said that I would not even be looked at. Well maybe so, but I still do it to support the club to keep this sport going... Who cares if my hound wins, I know my hound isnt the prettiness thing but he hunts... I enjoy supporting the clubs on the bench.. When I go to a bench show I always say I am donating my money LOL
Bench shows do serve a purpose well use to, according some of the old timers, it was show off the conformation and prettiness of the hound whether it had battle scars or not. and it helps bring more people into the sport and again to support the little clubs...
Mainly, to keep and bring people into the sport.
I know I am not here to change your mind but I am giving you my opinion since you posted this.

Bench shows are really enjoyable, I may not have the finesse as some of the bench showers but I really enjoy it.. It gives me a satisfaction of having that one on one with my dog. Getting my dog to heal and gait on a leash and to stack him and stand still just listening to my voice.. Like I said, that one on one with my dog...
I take alot of pride into that.. to be able to do that with my dog.
I am going to say this: When I am hunting or benching my dog, my dog is my partner,, There is alot of hunters out there, that throw their dog in the dog box, turn it loose and tree a few game, then back in the dog box and back in the kennel.. End of story,,
Dogs especially hounds love to be close their people,, Dos are pack animals they need that,,

OH my.....

"the elderly and the kid" in me enjoys it because I don't like coon hunting, I simply love the hound.

I don't think it has anything at all to do with age. It is a love for the hound. I have shown hounds on a bench that I would then turn around and hand the lead to the hunting handler. They in turn would hunt all night and end up winning or loosing just as I had done with the same hound during the bench show.

What difference does it make who likes the bench shows or hunting? If you enjoy what your doing, then go do it.

"the elderly" side of me really thinks this question has been beat to death on the site.
"the kid" in me has to jump in every time for some dumb reason.....

Cleo,
I know alot of people that just love it, it dont matter what age.. I am sorry that offended you on that. Alot of people would just love to take away others' rights fast but if someone tried to take their rights they scream... I know alot of people agree with my statement on this: Bench shows are really enjoyable, I may not have the finesse as some of the bench showers but I really enjoy it.. It gives me a satisfaction of having that one on one with my dog. Getting my dog to heal and gait on a leash and to stack him and stand still just listening to my voice.. I agree 100%.

There is good and bad in it all. I do it because I love it. I try not to worry about the negative!

There are a lot of people that have dogs they "show" but they are really very completive in other K9 areas as well. Conformation, OB, Field and Water sports. So many other things then just being "purty"

I loose way more then I win, so OBVIOUSLY that's not why I do it! I just have fun. I like to meet new people and fellowship.

Have a ball with your dogs! That's why God so kindly gave them to us!!!

Ok Honestly do you really want me to get started on the whole breed standard thing.

And why do you care, if you do not like the shows then DO NOT GO TO THEM.... Stay in the woods please.

I personally love to show my hounds and I also love to hunt as much as the next person.

I take great pride in showing hounds that are a great showing of the breed and the standard for that breed.

Just be glad they do not make them hunting dogs pass a breed standard test before they go to the woods.

This is such and old and beat to death story.....

LEAVE IT ALONE!!

We are too, saving pennies... LOL

Why watch, let's put the our buddies up on the bench..
I don't like watching too much, I like doing... LOL
I am hoping to make out there this year.
I have gone three times and all three were great. I got to meet some really awesome people out there. I like talking to the ole timers definitely... If you ask them, they aren't ole timers, they are still learning about the hounds.. I love their attitude...
I try to learn from them as much as I can...

Conformation standards absolutely serve a purpose in a hunting breed. Your hounds are designed and put together with hunting in mind. For example, the long ears can help pick up scent to help the dog track. A deep chest helps him keep his breath while running all the miles he goes. Good straight, strong teeth help him protect himself and nourish himself. And two testicles assure that he will produce a pup with the same. Who would want to breed thier female to a stud who is a Grand Nite Champion, but has short ears and a shallow chest and crooked legs? No one that I know of...

A breed standard has been developed to assure us that we are hunting a dog that is BUILT to perform his hunting duties without any physical issues. The bench shows help to enforce what we want in our hounds and what they need to look like to be able to hunt correctly.

If anyone has a problem with shows or does not enjoy them, please, just simply do not participate. We personally greatly enjoy showing our dogs off and earning titles for them. It proves that our hounds are bred well enough to be able to do what they were bred for in the first place. We also participate in the hunts, but not as often, as we have encountered many dishonest people so far. Pleasure hunting is our main focus.

The conformation standards absolutely have thier place in our hunting programs, and anyone should be able to make sense of that. It's not about being pretty - it's about serving a purpose.

---

Tamarack Kennels - a hunting dog should not be faulted for his hunting scars. He should be looked upon just like the spotless ones by your local club judge...

http://www.ukcdogs.com/WebSite.nsf/...dBenchShowRules
24. Working dogs are not to be penalized for scars or injuries caused by hunting.

Bench shows are a blessing from God for me. Me who met my husband at a coonhunt. Me who hunted 6 or 7 nights a week with my husband and competition hunted and titled a few dogs out myself. Then the me who then was blessed with 3 little girls within 3 years and was no longer able to go to the woods at night. The me who puts our kids to bed and does housework that has to be done WHILE my husband goes hunting. The me who loves coonhounds very very much but wouldnt be able to be involoved with them much at this time in my life IF it wasnt for bench shows, that I can do during the day & with my kids as a family. I thank the Lord UKC has many different activities for us to do with our dogs instead of just 1 thing. We can be involoved as a family.

I never understood the purpose of the bench shows. Some of the dogs never even make it to the woods. I don't care what a dog looks like it is what it can do in the woods. Sure some of the dogs look great, but a true hunting dog will have nicked ears and a few scratches here and there. These dogs never win on the bench. The dogs that go to a doggi boutique win!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wrong...

More of these dogs are hunted than you realize!!!!

This is not true - please read my post above... Our dogs are first and foremost HUNTING dogs. They may get a bath in the tub every so often, but we certainly don't send them to a "doggie boutique." Currently we have several CH dogs and a couple close to GRCH. They all have scratches and nicks on thier faces and bodies from hunting.

Really.. what does it matter to you guys? They are not effecting you in anyway, shape or form.. You can bitch about the dogs not being hunted, but.. you don't really know that.. If you don't want a "Bench Show" dog.. Then don't get one..

Out of all the hunting communities, houndsmen are the biggest bitchers there are.. And people wonder why I won't subject myself to nite hunt with these egos...
