Tying at The Tree

I was talking to someone tonight and leashing dogs at the tree came up. What advantages or disadvantages do you see in tying dogs at the tree, aside from preparing them to be tied during the course of a night hunt?

Or why do you tie them or why don't you tie them at the tree? I don't tie mine at the tree no reason I just don't see a need to...

first of all when hunting with them you tie them back if your going to shoot one out there is always the chance the coon call fall out hitting your hound as there have been hounds crippled and killed by being hit with the falling coon.
if your competition hunting you must tie your hound back and make sure its tied back away from the other hounds so they don't fight with another hound more than once i have them get excited enough to bite another hound or another handler.
so if you do both you might as well get them used to being tied

When hunting a young dog I feel tying them up at the tree actually helps tighting them up on the tree. If your dog is loose on the tree it seems to help. I always tie mine up. It also seems to help control dogs jumping at the tree. It somewhat breaks a dog from lunging upward because it jurks him back down to the ground.

I always tie em back when I have more than one dog, a young dog, nite hunt or when i'm shootin coons out. Just keeps them outa trouble.
If i'm just pleasure hunting and got the one dog, chances are I don't bother.

That is the funniest thing I think I have ever heard. I have never tied a dog unless comp. hunting. And haven't ever had any problems like that. lol

Thats not funny at all if it happens to you. A real nice English was hit directly on the back by a large coon here in my area and it instantly paralyzed the dog, talk about scared. They took him straight to the vet and he was x-rayed, fortunately it was only a hairline crack, the paralysis was the result of bruising on the spinal cord. He recovered but it could have been worse, and the vet bill was not cheap for the after hours call and x-rays.....

Every situation is differant to me. Single dog I want it to be able to smell the wood so if I can tie it close I will if anot and it is staying on the wood I leave it. Two dogs if squaling it out, no I leave them loose as long as they will stay on the tree. Now if I am wanting to show a dog he had the meat but not take the coon I will tie the dog back so it can see the coon come down and run off but not get it or rerun it......
Now if it is a hard tree to shine and I think it is going to take a while to allways tie them back becouse I can't watch what they are doing and shine a tree. I like leaveing them off when I can so I can nip any treeing problems in the bud........Like face barking niping ect. a lot of that can be fixed if they get a sore nose first time they ever try it.......

I usually tie dogs at the tree. One time I didn't when I was shooting a coon out that was in a leaning tree where it shouldn't
have been able to hit a dog. The darn thing come out and bounced down the tree trunk and hit a young dog square in the
back. Thought it killed him as he didn't move for a little bit but
he was alright after a while. The poor dog took a beating that
night as he had caught a thirty pound coon in a cornfield before
that and was chewed up pretty bad already.

We tie all the dogs at every bear tree, for obvious reasons.

Coon hunting I rarely do. Typically I forget to even bring a leash. Unless at a Nite Hunt. I have one dog who will sometimes climb a tree, or jack a tree once we get there, I usually bring a leash if I take him. My one female is a sit back tree dog, who will climb as well, with her I just call her out, and she won't reclimb it. Tieing her has actually had the opposite effect, she gets so frustrated, she will tear up anything and everthing she is near. Branches, bushes, sticks, tall grass - looks like a bulldozer whent thru. She will tag you if you walk past her too close, and she's chewed through more leashes than I care to mention - including those that other dogs were tied too, not just hers. I will tie a young pup if we plan on shooting a coon just to make sure they aren't gunshy.

98% of the time they are unleashed, especially when we're gonna shoot a coon out.

I have a buddy that i hunt with that ties all his Blue dogs back because about 15 years or so ago he lost his best hound to a coon falling right in the middle of his back. So you and me might not have scene it but its close enough to HOME to know that i atleast hold my dog back when he shoots one out.

Always the first thing i do. Cant think of one good reason not to but i know lots of good reasons to do it.
I usually have a young dog along and i want them to know the tree is the end of the line.

same here,
but if i'm hunting 2 or more dogs only 1 will be loose when shooting a coon out..my dogs tree coon and are watching for coon to fall when the gun cracks..
i used to leave them all loose but they wouldnt be much of a coon to look at when i did that,
even 2 good dogs would shred one before you could get it from them,,
one of them will make a rag out of a coon if you let them chew on it long..

i try to keep my dogs treeing coon and not trees.and they are wanting what falls out when the ruger scorecard cracks..

Ki4qpu, I know you have already been told this but this is pretty serious. It is not one bit funny when a dog gets hit by a falling coon! It happened to my female about 5 years ago and she was laid up for over a week. It was a pretty big coon and it fell about 40feet and hit her in the center of her back and put her right down. I was scared to death it paralized her but she recovered, thank god! My dogs are always tied back for this reason and also I have better control of the whole tree scene. When you are breaking a pup if you have it tied back there is no chance for it to get nailed by another dog in all the excitement, especially when the coon hits the ground. Do what you want, mine get tied back!

thankyou for answerpng my answer wouldn't have been as nice as your couple of years ago a top english stud had to be put down because a coon hit him and broke his back.
if you want to read some funny posts read ki4qpu posts on breeding and complaining about breeders on the same page he wants to sell some mutt curs for a hundred dollars to the first person that shows up he is quite the expert

I'm not in it for hides. I don't kill many, but when we do, them dogs are waiting for em, and the coon still has a lot of kick in him. The dogs get chewed up now and then, but I have dogs that are kill dogs, not bay dogs. Never had to take them to the Vet. This weekend the dogs caught and killed a 28# coon in 3ft of water filled with tullies so thick you couldn't even see em. That isn't a itty bitty coon.

If a falling or jumping coon hits one of mine it would be in the face. I have 1 - 2 dogs under a tree and if there is 2 one will be a pup. It is easy to control and for coon around here it is plenty of dog for squaling them out. Around here 28 lb. is a big coon........

Like I said earlier though. Every situation is differant just like every dog is differant and you have to give that particular dog what it needs to get it to do what you want. Hard fast rules don't belong in dog training......

Not to argue but to me it does just the opposite. If you have any tree problems you can't work on them with them tied up. The dog has to have the freedome to mess up before you can correct it. To me it is like makeing it imposible for a kid to be able to do something instead of putting it infront of them and telling them don't touch. One way teaches there are consequences for there actions and the other just get them in a behavioral patern. I want them in the patern but I allso want them to know there is discipline in the world and were it comes from. Then they do the right thing for 3 reasons.
1. They are in the habbit.
2. They get petted for doing it that way.
3. They get there tail in trouble if they don't.

I have never use the purley positive motivational training. Never done the ristrictive behavoriel method either. I have allways used the prase and punishment on kids dogs and horses and had good results on all. Not saying it is the right way and for sure not the only way. I have seen good results with all methods. I have just found that it my kid, dog or horse is going to the street chaseing something the fear of punishment is what will stop them the most consistant........

the same here ,if i'm hunting 3 dogs by myself and going to shoot a coon out ,1 kill dog will be loose and the other 2 will be hooked to a cupler and tied back 10' to a sapling where theres nothing to tangle the leash,,if the dog dont know enough to watch for the coon it will be tied back till it does learn..i do not tie dogs separt and only cary 2 leads and a 3way coupler,,i dont train my dogs to night hunt but to tree coon and any aggression will be deald with at the tree or in the box,,i also put the males together in one side of the box and females together in the other side and any nonsence will have a #12d steel toed boot entering the box to stop it..,,as barney says"nip it in the butt" before it gets out of control..,
also another thing i do is grab hold of a dog while its eating or chewing on a coon ,i'll be wearing leather gloves and if that dog grabs without looking to see what has ahold of him/her it will get a taste of education it wont forget the next time something touch's them..,,
