Iowa coonhunters go help DNR

Someone needs to help the DNR as they are to busy. Heres the story from 11-3-04
"Article in the Iowa City, IA newspaper this a.m. about a couple out taking their evening stroll in the west side of town, walking through the University of Iowa's Finkbine golf course, low and behold they spotted a large cougar crouched on top of a hill eyeballing a small group of deer in a wooded ravine down below. This particular cat has been spotted numerous times in various parks, etc. over the past year, the DNR boys were going to try and get out at look for tracks etc., "sometime this week". They couldn't get out to check on the story when it was fresh, told the couple all the conservation officers were too busy policing the start of the Iowa pheasant season last weekend. This particular cat is almost becoming something of an local legend, due to the large number of sightings in just the past year. Certainly doesn't seem to be one that's too shy of humans, someone's escaped "exotic" (and illegal) pet perhaps? "

this animal was placed there by the DNR , simply to control the over population of deer , they would rather see an animal eat them than a human .

I just moved here to Nebraska from a few miles south of Iowa City in August, anyway, to add a little insight to the post saying the DNR put it there to kill the deer due to over poputation etc, the DNR may have put it in Johnson county as there has been sightings around Solon (north of Iowa City) and surrounding areas. There is sharp shooters hired to control the deer in Iowa City and then all the meat is turned into burger and given away to the public on Wednesdays, I think that was the day last year, not sure if it is the same this year or not. I do also know that there was a guy from somewhere around Iowa City that had a pet mtn. lion that he would take to the steel mill in Wilton so it's a possibility that it was a pet. Early this spring there was another article in the Iowa City paper that residents of Johnson county had been seeing a mountain lion and the DNR was "assuring" them that there were none around. Either way, I really don't think that the intent of it was to kill the deer rather than having humans consuming the deer, JMO.

Anybody who thinks the Ia DNR actually put the Mt. lion in ia is pretty ignorent. Everybody including the DNR is plenty aware that they are here. Think about it, if you worked for the DNR and you came out and started telling people that ya I know they are here and bla bla bla. The next thing you know your name is printed in the local paper saying so and so who works for the DNR said this and said that. You might as well kiss your job good by. It's in their best intrest to just plead the 5th. What's even worse is the article in the DM register about the group of people that want to put a bounty on them in the state. That's all we need.

Funny how people think the DNR are planting moutain lions in Iowa,I for one don't by it. Most predators follow the food source,in Iowa the deer are the food. So if there is more food here then say Wisconsin,they won't be far behind. I found a cat track behind my house this spring,it is almost five inches across. I live a half an hour west of Iowa City. Mulerider,let me know when ya head for the collage town,I sure would like to tree one!!!!LOL!!!

They don't want to acknowledge the cats, or wolfs etc because if they do then they will have to get tied up with the endangered specieses(I can't spell to good) act. This would cost money for studies and possibly close hunting in the area.

Not to mention that the Iowa DNR would rather see a human be eaten than one of their precious deer. 305 dollars for an out of state tag and you have to enter a drawing. Yeah only an idiot would believe the DNR is releasing them. Unless they found away to make them hunt anlerless deer only.

I'm glad my dogs don't run any trash!!!

If there are so many cats in Iowa how come nobody can come up with pictures? Yeah there have been a few killed in the last few yrs but with as many sightings eveyone claims to see where are the pictures?

I have no excuse for that night. But that is not my dog yet and I don't remember her treeing!!!!!! I think it could've been some kind of short tailed cat.
