more the better i think ive seen myself harder hunting after a week or 2 of hard 6 night a week hunts even just one drop a night when that dog starts to bark about half hour after sun goes down every night you know he wants the meat
it depend's
ITdepend's if you what to put a title on himor her if you want to winn in the night hunts 4 nights aweek is good enought to keep the dog in shape, figure 4 hours a night . When i was younger I'd hunt 7 nights a week but I would hunt the dog down and you would have to take ahold of the chain to get the dog to come out of the dog house a 2 yr. old one thing about it you didn't have much junk runnig the dog was to dammed tired to run junk.
but I learn over the years you don't have to do that the high powerd pups of today thats not the answer 3 or 4 nights a week and 1or 2 trees and go home is the thing to do.
I learned if you keep it fun for a young dog and not a grinding job
the dog seems to be more inthosed about getting the job done.
Also don't over work a young dog on yard work, if its bred right it dosn't take much to get them going over the last 15 or twenty years the strain of dogs I have been hunting all you have to do is take them out with older dogs drop two or three coon and there a hunting and treeing almost as good as a n older dog . If some one goes with you and dosn't know its only the tenth time the pup been in the woods, they think its a 2 or 3 year old . don't take them to the woods on till they are 8 mons. old when they are 10 to 12 mns. they will be treeing their own without any help hunt them alone then hunt them with other dogs and alone mix it up. If they are 18 mns. old put them in the hunts maybe younger.

quote:Well you can tree coon with one that has made a coon dog and not hunt them much but they need to be hunted several times a week to keep them up to their game. Yes it's true you can keep one penned up for months and tree one with that dog the first night they are hunted.

The question was how many nights to "make a top dog". I think every dog has one time in its life when it needs to be hunted 4-5 nights a week to really be a top dog. This comes at a different age for each dog but occurs when they are really focused on hunting. Remember when you first got into coonhunting and all you could do was think, eat, sleep and breathe hunting? This occurs in dogs too and that is the time in the dogs life when it needs to be in the woods.
