hunt question

ok here is a good question , lets see what kind of answers we get...

you go to a hunt (big hunt or local hunt either one) your cast draws out you are on a 4 dog cast. first 2 drops go great. when you get ready to make the 3rd drop you see a gun in the truck of one of the hunters , what do you do ? do you warn them, do you scratch them or do you let it go.( remember ukc rules are HONOR rules )
lets get some answers.... mike

I figure if you would check everyones before a hunt 90% would have a gun in the truck or box. I've seen alot of willing and dealings done before a hunt, great place to sell a small rifle.

I have never seen anyone scratched for having a rifle in there vehicle.

I think the rule was put into effect to try and hinder people from bringing there guns but 5 out of 10 people have some kind of firearm in there vehicle or dog box.

I second that and ad that I wouldn't be real friendly to anyone that would............EVEN IF THERE BEHIND and that is the only way they can win...................

Seen it happen one time on a cast I was on. Thought it was a unsportsmanlike considering it was done out of animosity, spite and eliminating competition. And....still feel the same today. In the end the "scratched" guy was smiling upon our return when the scorecard was handed in.

Posted by on 02-24-2010 06:35 PM:

Now before someone jumps up and says that we don't respect or abide by UKC rules.....remember, the question was "what would we do?" I never carry a gun to a hunt and I'd bet my last dollar that Allen doesn't either but that wasn't the question. What would I do? NOTHING!

Rifle

I always carry a .22 rifle in the top storage of my dogbox. And more often than not,I'll have it with me at the comp. hunts. Not that I go out of my way to be sure I have it,but because I have forgotten to remove it before leaving home. There is quite a few times that the thought crossed my mind about what consequences I would have to face if someone called me out for it.

I agree with you Jim. When asked what i would do, and it is nothing. I believe to strongly in our costitutions second amendment to cause a stink. If it was only in the truck, and not removed from it, i do not see where anyone who call themselves a coon hunter should have a problem. Heck, i have been to some places where you might would have loved to have been armed with a platoon of Marines to feel safe.

Here in Minnesota, our season runs from late October to Mid March. Very few competition events in that time frame. I can't think of a reason someone would still be carrying one in the box or truck.

Posted by Robert Johnson on 02-24-2010 08:11 PM:

In Georgia, we don't carry them for raccoons. other things crawling around out there at night.

Here is what I would do. First, I would say nothing. Then after thinking it over,I would do nothing. But then when The other two dogs were scratched for fighting, and I now have a chance to sneak up on a win,and there is no other way I can win because his dog got lucky and treed three coons and my dog only left two trees, slick treed twice, and I dont know what that last track was but I deserve to win this one because I remembered to take my gun out from pleasure hunting the night before and by God he didnt so I win by technicality. Thats when I decide,no wait a minute,I will not stoop to that level. This is my name that this will follow around for ever. So,I do "NOTHING".

I wouldn't say anything but I try to remember to take the rifle out of the truck before going to a nite hunt.

The only time I've seen a rifle being an issue is when I was riding with a guy and he stopped the truck and poked his rifle out the window and shot a housecat out of the tree that was right next to the road. I guess he hates housecats, lol. That was a _KC hunt ....

In my mind a bigger issue is the guy that has a cooler full of beer in the back of his truck during the event. What, if anything, do you do about that?

Back in the day when everyone had a gun rack in the back glass, they had a gun of some kind hanging in them. If they didn't, you wondered if they really hunted. Unless the person gets mad at me for winning and tries to use it on me, I wouldn't have a problem. Don't try to shoot my mean dog either, it took me a long time to get it that way. LOL

I have no issue with either one as long as it's kept in the truck while on the grounds during the hunt. After the hunt on your way home hey bottoms up. I don't care what people do on their time but i know that i've wanted to kick back a few on the way home from a hunt and when it don't get done till 2 or 3 like around here you can't stop and buy any. As long it's out of sight out of mind till it's done who cares. I mean most of us are adults and yah there's some exceptions out there but in the end were all adults.

TO CLEAR THINGS UP A LITTLE, I WAS ON THE CAST MIKE IS REFERRING TO. I OWN A FEMALE THAT WAS BEING HUNTED ON THAT CAST BY A BUDDY OF MINE. YES I DID HAVE A .22 PISTOL STUCK BETWEEN THE SEAT AND CONSOLE. YOU COULD SEE THE WOOD GRIPS STICKING UP ABOVE THE SEAT.

THERE ARE SOME OTHER SITUATIONS THAT CAME UP ON THAT CAST ALSO. I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT ONE CERTAIN FEMALE SPECTATOR TEXT MESSAGED THE MASTER OF HOUNDS DURING THE CAST TO FIND OUT WHAT TO DO ABOUT A POSSIBLE SCRATCH FOR RULES VIOLATION (DIFFERENT SITUATION THAN THE PISTOL). I'M PRETTY SURE THERE IS A RULE THAT SAYS "NO CELL PHONE USE ON THE CAST" AND ESPECIALLY TO THE MASTER OF HOUNDS (THE MOH DIDN'T SEE THE TEXT TILL THE NEXT MORNING). IT LOOKS LIKE AS MUCH AS THE PEOPLE INVOLVED HUNT UKC THAT THEY WOULD KNOW THE PROPER PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW IN THAT SITUATION INSTEAD OF TRYING TO ILLEGALLY CONTACT THE MOH FOR ADVICE.

OUR FEMALE LOOKED LIKE CRAP THAT NIGHT AND IF SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN ON HER GAME, SHE WOULD HAVE DESTROYED THE CAST. SHE DID TREE 2 COONS AND WAS WINNIG THE CAST +350 TO +275 PLUS. THE LAST TREE OF THE NIGHT, THE OTHER 3 HOUNDS WAS ON A MEDIUM-SIZED HARDWOOD. OUR FEMALE WAS IN DEEPER ON TRACK, BUT (LIKE A DUMMY) CAME BACK TO THE OTHER 3 TREED. MY BUDDY HUNTING OUR FEMALE CAN FIND A KITTEN COON IN A CALIFORNIA REDWOOD AND IN THE SAME SENSE CAN TELL WHEN THERE AIN'T ONE THERE EITHER. YOU GUESSED IT, 3 TO 1 PLUS. I KNOW SOME OF YOU ARE SAYING 3 TO 1 VOTE, MUST HAVE BEEN A COON, BUT IF YOU LOOK A LITTLE DEEPER INTO IT THAT THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO (IN UKC)WHEN THERE IS A 3 -1 VOTE ON SCORING A TREE. YOU COULD PUT A ? ON THE CARD BUT WHAT IS THE MOH GOING TO DO? THE ONLY THING HE CAN.......... GO WITH THE 3. IN AN OTHER REGISTERY, A QUESTION COULD BE PLACED ON THE CARD, THE TREE MARKED, A DOG LEFT AT THE TREE AND A 3 PERSON PANEL WOULD COME OUT AND SCORED THE TREE CORRECTLY. IF PLUSSED, THE MAN WITH THE QUESTION IS BARRED. IF MINUS, THE OTHER THREE MEN ARE BARRED. WHEN THERE ARE REPRACUSSIONS THAT COULD GET YOU BARRED FROM A SPORT YOU LOVE, YOU ARE GOING TO DO WHATS RIGHT AND YOU WILL FIND THINGS ARE SCORED MORE HONESTLY. WHEN THERE IS NO CHANCE OF PUNISHMENT, SOMEONE IS MORE LIKELY TO DO WHATS BEST FOR THEM AND NOT WHATS RIGHT.

MAKES YOU WONDER HOW SOME PEOPLE WIN??!!??!??

THE WEEK THAT THIS HUNT IN QUESTION TOOK PLACE, I HUNTED IN 5 CAST IN 3 DIFFERENT REGISTERYS. WHEN I FINISHED HUNTING IN 2 OF THE KC'S, I WAS WALKING A LITTLE FUNNY WITH A PAIN IN MY REAR. I BELIEVE I'LL STICK TO WHERE THE HUNTERS ARE A LITTLE MORE "PROFESSIONAL"

TODD

I don't think Mike was pin pointing that particular cast. We hunt ALOT of hunts, but since you opened this can up... IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH ME HERE IS MY PHONE NUMBER 336-469-0046. And you are more than welcome to call me at any time. But, when you do you had better have your facts straight. Because if I am not mistaken cell phone use is allowed, as long as you are not communicating about SCORES. And I still have that text and you or anyone else is more than welcome to see it if there are any questions. Don't come on here and think that you are going to trash me because I can assure you I WILL WIN Todd.
