Hunters in Kansas - Please read
I am just getting into coon hunting, and I'm needing some help. I am looking for some people in my area (Wichita, KS) that I could talk with. I have a dog, but I am having a lot of trouble keeping him focused. If there is some one out there that can help please leave me a way to get a hold of you.
Thanks,
KJ
Well, I was hoping somebody would show up. No one out there from Kansas?

I lived in Great Bend, Kansas about 15 years ago. Hunted by myself for the biggest part of the first couple of years I lived up there. Then started finding pleanty of hunters to hunt with. There are some great guys in that area.
My thoughts are you need to go to as many local hunts as possible. You don't have to participate, but you will meet the guys that hunt arround where you live. Don't start off too pushy, just talk a little and listen a lot. Then in a few months, when the local guys get to know you, they will invite you to hunt with them.
Just some ideas. It is hard to get started when you are new to hunting or new to an area.

I just heard about one coming up in March in Altamont. Do you know of any others that happen pretty regularly? Or maybe a site I could check?

I live almost as far west as you could 2 years ago and call it wichita. Now I'm surrounded by golf courses and xxx,xxx dollar houses.
135th st. and Maple if you're familiar.
He's a rescue his mom was a blue heeler w/ the father being unknown. Well his father is quite possibly a B&T. He's got a nose. It has gotten him in trouble his whole life.
I have tried to start him on scent drags. He will find it, but he likes to stop and check out everything else out first. He is quiet while trailing, that I would like to fix too. I watched him work once perfect w/o any distraction but most the time it's a 3D version of pong. I'm having fun with him, but I know most of his trouble has got to be me.
I've had him out before just to see what he did and he put his nose to the ground and went to work (quietly unfortunately). Didn't attempt to tree he'd just go out quite a ways and look back to make sure I was following. I could see track where he was running, but it wasn't always coon. In fact, it was everything short of a tire!
He is 9 mos old.
you are swimming upstream, trying to make a hound out of a heeler...
Ya, I know... Might be doing a little too much wishful thinking... Like I said I've got my sites set on a more promising dog, but just seeing if the one I got can go along. I just realized I haven't put up a photo. Guess I can do that too.

plenty coon in kansas
if i spelled it rite but if i where you i would buy a pup from a good line to train or buy a finished dog but if your just starting to coon hunt and i think you are you need to buy a good one first and the dog will teach you a few things and make it easer on you to learn and please dont take my advice the wrong way becauls i am onley trying to help you, david

Ya, I'm leaning that way too... Unfortunately I'll have to do some digging and research. I don't know of any breeders/trainers. After reading on here I'm sure they exist. And they might even be in the same state from what I'm hearing, but they're going to expect money lol, and well I don't have it quite yet.
