Learn to laugh at your dog instead of cussing him. Remember it is supposed to be fun. I was picking everything my dog did apart and it got to were it wasn’t very fun anymore. Me and a friend turned loose at dark one night and by 9:30 had treed five singles. We walked out of the woods thinking we had seen some of the worst dog work ever. I had to reevaluate everything after that. Just don’t take it to seriously.

Posted by firefighter580 on 02-15-2010 11:25 PM:

yea i will try not to pick them apart i am not sure about competition hunts yet just doing it for fun right now would like to join a club or something thats close to home

gettin started

I remember when i first got into hounds i was lucky enough to have a guy that had hunted hounds for many years help me out. He took me and a buddy of mine under his wing and helped us every step of the way. I dont think he ever turned us down when we called him to hunt. He had some nice hounds and mine wouldnt hunt alone but did good with his hound so we relyed on him alot. I learned alot from him about training pups and hound hunting in general. My advice would be try to hunt with a seasoned hunter some and learn when you are out hunting. most of all enjoy it. I have developed many friends over the years by hunting hounds. Even though the guy that help me get going was over 30 years older that i am we develope a friendship and still try to hunt with him when i can. Just keep your dogs in the woods, and learn from them. They will teach you alot also just by watching them and listening to them. Good luck with your hounds!

Find somebody with a pretty good dog. Some thing like you want yours to be. Make sure he trained his own dog. Then ask him for his help. There are a lot of experts that can ruin a dog in a few nights of hunting it. So ask, read go see, and get as much info as you can before you do anything to your dog. Some methods are pretty crazy and most thing that end a problem all in one night can allso ruin a dog all in one night. Other than that handle the dog around the house and out for walks so you know it and it knows you. Obidence is a big one. If it minds at home it will want to please in the woods. Won't make it a saint but it will be in the habbit of haveing to mind you. Good luck.

I see coondawg_hunter has a great sense of humor. You apparently dont know what j/k means. Thats why i like hunting by myself. You just reminded me of that.

Untill you find someone to help you. Just scold them for what you don't like and pet them for what you do like and you will wind up with atleast an average dog. If you have a good prospect to start with.

HAVE FUN

Some times dogs do the darndest things and get in the darndest places just laugh when you can. Hunt with people that have the interest of you and your hound in mind not just there own. Savor the good nights because there will be bad nights (hopefully not to many). HAPPY HUNTING

I don't know much about training hounds, but I do love hunting. Keep it fun and the rest seems to work itself out.

I know there are plenty of people on here that dont like them, but the Walk with Wick books, I and II are full of good information on working dogs, both in the yard and in the timber, and a lot of good info on what not to do. And dont believe most of what you read on here, lol...

Pretty good advice, even a veteran coonhunter could use.

Also, hunt with different people. You can pickup tips and techniques from everyone and it increases your learning curve. Soak it in and have fun.
