What is your favorite line of redbones

Thought I would get some redbone talk on here. What is your favorite line of redbones and what line do they cross well on.

Cold Nosed and Accurate

Timber Chopper and his son---Chickhominy Max crossed with Blakesley breeding. Incredible pleasure hounds that can win in competition as well. Got to be careful not to lose the "openess on track" as double Famos Amos dogs tend to be too tight on track.
Yeah, yeah---Finder, Cameron, Old Timer, Anderson, Stoll, etc are all stuck in the past.....and the Redbone breed is dying 'cause we don't breed to the hot (pointy) nosed hounds of our breed and others, etc, etc, etc. Just hunt with Anderson's Drum or Pelzer's young hound---sound linebreeding onto old Blakesley/Lufcy stock will suit me and my friends just fine.

Years ago when I first started coon hunting, the dog that taught me what a coonhound ought to be was a Redbone female that went back to Magill's Jungle Joe Goe on her third generation.

Dogs don't get any better than she was.

She was the most perfect pleasure hound I have ever hunted with. The only thing I would have changed about her was her mouth. She bawled on a cold track some, but had a deep, coarse chop most of the time on track. I would have also changed the fact that she had been speyed at a young age so her blood could have been perpetuated.

Hillbilly Brandy bred dogs...

I really like dogs that go back to Hillbilly Brandy. We have hunted with them for nearly 7 years. They are quick to learn, dont have alot of trouble with babblers, good strike, can take tracks as they come depending on the dogs nose, hard tree dogs that find the meat.

You can see a few pictures of CH NTCH'PR'Stepp's Rattlesnake Jake direct out of GRCH GRNTCH'PR'Greene's Hillbilly Brandy at

Years ago I used to hunt with a Gentlemen who had Turpin breed redbones. They were real dark red with coal black eyes, sometimes they would even have black in there back. It seems todays reddogs are light colored and have light eyes, and a white chest.

Boys, maybe i am prejudice, but look at the hunts and the results! Autumn oaks this year.....high male and female....both fireball bred,National Redbone days.......high male and female......both fireball bred! American Redbone Days....a Fireball Female! now i am hunting a female right now that is a good as any of any breed!, and she is not fireball bred(Nighty Nite Moonlight Kate)(outlaw bred)! and brent peel has had a exellent year with his pepper dog, congratulations! but what i am getting at is look at the number of dogs that are putting up the results!!
Winter classic- male,chainsaw(fireball),female,squaw(fireball)
Walker days-Kate
Black-n-tan days- Jackie(fireball)
Bluetick days-Kate
plott days- Jackie(fireball)
English days-Kate
national redbone days- Jackie and Bozo(both fireball)
American redbone days-pepper and quenne(female is fireball)
Autumn Oaks- Jackie and Tex(both fireball)

If u look back through the past 5 yrs i think u will find almost the same results every year! Just pointing out the obvious!

I'm with you. I hunted Red Oak Mike blood back in the late early to mid 90's, which was my favorite Red line. He was bred with just about all of those old lines. Turpin, Hennings, Blakesly, Lufcy, Hunters. Big, rawboned HOUND. Dark red, bawl mouthed, go yonder dog. Not a pumpkin colored, sqeaky mouthed, half-greyhound looking dog.

I also used to hunt some hounds out of Jake Elder's stock. Anyone ever heard of him?

Redbones

Come on guys,
harold hoffmiester has some of the best bred redbone line around all the others are good too, but you got to mention that awesome line. Some of the best redbones in the world never get put into any hunts and exposed to the world.

Hey Darrell-

Do you mean like, Elder's Red Buck, Little Bit and Rusty? Got a little of that blood now. I never got to hunt with Buck, Mr. Finder did and I guess he had a mouth that made you remember him by. Little Bit was a daughter of MO. River Bo which I also have a little of. Not much to look at but he but tree in his pups and also had a good track mouth. Would have liked to have hunted with the Buck hound, but did get to hunt with a daughter out of Rusty.

I don't have a favorite line of Redbones. Just as long as they tree coons!!!!!!!

Posted by Joe Maitland on 09-02-2003 07:43 PM:

The line that-

goes hunting good, gets treed, and has the meat with not much trash or aggressiveness.

I have Timber Jack blood, Outlaw, Fireball, Littleman, Woodpecker, even Chief. Heck it's all here, and there isn't any one particular thing you can say about any of them that sets them much apart over all. They each have their strong and weak points. In my opinion, anyone who is dead set on one strain is setting themselves up to be disappointed in the long run. Good dogs come and go. Culls come more often and go.

I think too many people pick one individual hound, good or bad, and use it to generalize a whole strain. Take them for what they are- one dog. Most people who are hooked (line and sinker) on a line of dogs don't have a great deal of experience to draw from, or are in this solely for personal notariety.

Fireball dogs may be winning visibly a lot right now. I think it is due in part to the Fireball sons and daughters crossing well with other lines, the fact that Fireball produced a multitude more pups than any other reddog (see percentages), and also because there are some hard working dedicated competition handlers who have chosen them to promote. Those guys would be winning with other strains, too, because they appreciate good dogs in general.

In 5 years you post this question on this board and there will be something new with a "label" characterizing it as the best.

The best thing the Fireball promoters could do right now, in my opinion, is outcross as much as possible and try to keep the blood improving by drawing from different strains and seeing what works well. No one dog got any winner or group of winners to the top. Same goes for the culls at the bottom.

who's line is it anyway

I'm with LittleJoe on this one ,let's not get so blind we forget all the females that were bred to Fireball to get these new winners .He is not the only dog in the mix .I'll give him credit thow for throwing some strong reproducers. Many of which are actually alot better than old Fireball himself, if you believe the percentages.

Mix it up boys and keep breeding coonhounds to coonhounds and these red dogs will keep turning heads.

Think about this for a second ...If you have a Gr.NiteCh. redbone I'll be willing to bet anyone that you beat more walkers than any other breed to make that dog a GrNiteCh.,,,, Just food for thought...

LittleJoe,
u summed it up very well! i wasnt trying to press one line on anybody nor say it was the only! your right, i am actually a fan of some outcrosses. but you need your strong basis for foundation stock from what u do like, whatever it may be! ive hunted some dang good hoffmiester dogs, and i am hunting one of the best redbones i have ever seen right now which is outlaw bred! my point is if you dont mention the fireball dogs as one of the top somebody is just plain being blind!

In the late 70;s thru the early 90's we hunted mostly Timber chopper bred dogs. Most of them were off from Timber chopper jr. or his grand pups. These dogs where very, very good hide dogs but most were courius about hunting with strange dogs. Now we are hunting fireball dogs and a female off of Taylors Pride that is a nice female. These dogs seem to have more hunt in them when you take them away from home and hunt them with strange dogs. What I was wondering is how the Sandy Creek Jake dog would cross with the fireball dogs.
