maine bear hunting

Looking for some info on bear hunting in maine would like to come up there to hunt and bring my own hounds. Thanks

To use your dogs you will need to hire a guide and buy a big game license. Second Nature and Spruce Mountain on here will getterdone for ya but they love there hounds so much you might have to give them some more cash to leave theirs in the kennel as we can only run four hounds at a time. These boys are the real no nonsense thing. Check out their posts.

I thought you could run 6 dogs during the training season?

According to the book you can only train or hunt 4 at a time on bear, training starts Aug.1 and lasts till the season starts and besides a big game license you also need a permit for bear.

Residents may train up to 6 dogs on bear from July 1st to the start of bear hunting season...... But as soon as the bear season with hounds start your only allowed to hunt 4 dogs ......Tim

When did that change my last law book is 2008 I did forget about July 1 it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks LOL but the OP did ask about hunting

the new law book is 2009/2011.... July 1st 2009 was the first time that the state of Maine has allowed us to run 6 dogs during training season...BUT on the bottom of page 13 of DOG TRAINING SEASON it says NOTE: These changes are in effect from July 1 2009-June 30 2010...So if anyone knows yet if we can still run 6 dogs for 2010 training season please let me know, cause the laws always change from year to year!!! Tim

So what's the deal with out of staters?

Can you hunt in Maine if you are a non-resident and bring your own hounds?

Nonresidents may not use a dog or dogs to hunt bear unless they employ and hunt with a resident Maine Guide . (This section does not apply to nonresidents who hold a valid Maine Guide license - they may hunt bear with the use of dogs themselves and guide residents but not nonresidents).The total # of clients with a licensed guide may not be more than 5..... Tim

I don't think non residents can train in maine only during kill season

The book says residents may train, so that leaves out non-residents.
