Question

I was laying in bed last night thinking. I see/hear guys talking about hounds that are owned by pleasure hunters that are said to be the real deal who can kick the livin bow-wow out of hounds in the nite-hunts.

My questions are.

Who are these hounds?
Where are these hounds?
Who owns these hounds?
What breed is this world-beater?

James; i would bet they exsist in their minds, and maybe thought it up in a dream too. sure, i think those dogs are out there, but most who will say such a thing are lacking the dog power to comp hunt, or they would.

Their is a lot of dogs out there that are comp dog caliber, but their handler isn't.
Just because you don't see them in hunts doesn't mean they're no good. Whats does a title give a dog? Titles are OK, but it doesn't make them a Coon Dog.

how are we to know? dogs that are not hunted, are not recorded to well. sure they may have papers, but only that owner knows what it will do, or the people close to them, and my guess is they wouldn't be on here much either.

I

have owned 4 dogs in the last 2 years 3 are grnites and the other has 3 wins toward grand. if not for friends asking to hunt these dogs in the hunts i know for sure they wouldn't all have titles because i don't handle in the hunts much anymore and it's just not that important to me to make the grnites but i for sure want to hunt dogs capable of it. so i would say that there are some out there.

Who are these hounds? They're just coonhounds like the rest of them, they're just owned by hunters that are in it for pleasure hunting, therefore they're unknown by the competetion world.
Where are these hounds? They're everywhere, they're just run by pleasure hunters, therefore, again, are unknown by the competetion world.
Who owns these hounds? The pleasure hunters of the coonhound world.
What breed is this world beater? Walkers, Plotts, English, Bluetick, Redbone, Black and Tan, or, all these breeds mixed up. A dog doesn't have to have a stack of papers to be a coondog.

James,

It's fun to believe that the worlds best coon treeing dog is tied to the bumper of some old rusted out pickup truck behind someone's barn somewhere in a holler behind some mountain. It might well be true, but I'd bet it isn't.

I've chased that rainbow before, and came up pretty much empty handed. Ended up with one of the best pure coon treeing dogs I've ever snapped a leadstrap to....but he was 100% pure alligator. Never hunted in a hunt, and never hunted on purpose with another male dog. Raised a litter of pups out of him, and killed em all for being mean as baby rattle snakes.

I have been lucky enough to hunt with several world hunt winners, I've been with and seen a lot of the hounds that form the foundation of what we think are the best hounds in the world. The reality is that there is a very fine line between good and great. I've seen a recent big time winner make three slicks in a row....this is a dog that is normally "almost 100%" accurate.

So the answer to your question, they don't exist. Good is good....and a good dog in the hands of a pleasure hunter is just a good dog in the hands of a competition hunter. As JiM posted in another post, it's easy for the guy that swears he'll never enter a competition hunt to crow on his dog cause he'll never have to put it up to the scrutiny that a competition dog gets on any given Friday night, being drawn out with three other dogs at random.

So dream if you like.....but don't be surprised if there is no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!

I absolutely LOVE to pleasure hunt. When I first got into it with my OWN dogs about 4 years ago, all I wanted to do was PLEASURE HUNT! LUCKILY, I wound up with a pretty decent female that was good at having a coon QUICK! In my own eyes, I thought she was pretty darn good! The only way I could atleast PROVE that to MYSELF was to learn the nite hunt rules and see how she stacked up against some of "the best".

I figured I atleast OWED it to MY DOG to prove to others that she was as good as I THOUGHT! I mean I did go around tootin my horn about her... why not try and back it up??? I learned much more about my dog and other dogs around the country in doing that. I LEARNED how to make her EVEN BETTER through the nite hunts! As Joe said, the "world beaters" tied to the back of the barn just do not exist.

If you think you have a GREAT dog and want to prove it to everyone, and toot your horn about how good it is, no matter who you are, atleast in my eyes, you're gonna find a way to get it in a nite hunt and see just how good it really is at treeing coons against other dogs!

Joe....jcculler. Exactly and in 100% total agreement! I have heard Al Gores internet hunters, coffee shop yappers, tobacco slobbering dog-traders speak of these world-beaters that have no titles and as said earlier "can kick the livin bow-wow out of hounds in the nite-hunts."

I did get a pm where superdog is. Don't know any reason why it wasn't posted here on the thread....must be a secret only few will learn of.>wink<

I have been in the woods with comp. dogs it wouldn't take much pleasure dog to beat. A lot of pleasure hunters pack some pretty good dogs. I can show you some that will beat your average comp. dog at your average local hunt. Some of these old comp. dogs wind up retireing into pleasure hunting homes.
Ask Pigset he has trained and sold some dang good dogs around here that went to pleasure hunters.

pleasure hounds

I know of many pleasure hounds around here that get the job done nightly. None of these hounds have ever been in a night hunt. Main reason being there are really no night hunts close. The guys with these dogs just enjoy hunting them and working with them. World beaters? maybe not but COONDOGS yes. I know of one little walker dog that my buddy owns that could not be bought for any price. Another blue dog that is gone now but is probably one of the best if not the best dog i have ever been in the woods with. These guys arent in it for the glory but just in it because they love it. Love listening to the dogs sing and seeing the progress of young hounds. Are there pleasure hounds out there that can win in the hunts? absolutely... Most of them you will never hear of cuz the guys that own them dont want people knocking on there door trying to buy them. Pleasure dogs are part of the family as much as they are hunting dogs.

every coon hunter in the world doesn't care about comp. hunting, some people enjoy a relaxing night in the woods with thier hounds,in my opinion (which doesn't count for much) like everything else drag racing, nascar, every sport for that matter has been ruined by the almighty dollar.I have seen many dogs that were pleasure dogs hunt with the best, and i have seen many "night champion"coon dogs look stupid, pullin up short, treeing possums every other tree etc..etc..just hunt the way you see fit,who cares how they hunt as long as your pleased

You're example is much better , but.....

Seems to me that Sizzlin' Heat was just a pleasure dog till he went to the world also.
I could be wrong , it's been a long time.
But , I do know that Joe Cannon had called a friend of mine trying to buy a brother to him that was never put in a hunt.

She came from behind Lee Weatherfords barn. He is bad about keeping a good one tied back there. Most of which have lengthy titles attached to them. The little red one came with a pkc title.

I have seen several and hunted with a few that I wouldn't want to draw in a hunt. I hunt with alot of pleasure hunters and comp hunters. A coondog is a coondog no matter what. If it is put in a hunt and gets a title, does that make it better? I have seen one of these dogs get purchased, granded in UKC, nite ch in AKC and NKC. Won SETWD in 89. And is what I base my kennel foundation on. If this dog would have been left in the original owners hands he would have never had a title, never been in a hunt, and would have been pleasure hunted his entire life. If you are looking for a world beater behind a barn, put the word out, and that you have the cash. Pleasure hunters are not stupid, they know what they got and they have a pretty good idea of what kind of money it takes to buy their nasty old pleasure dog. Pleasure or comp, a coondog is a coondog.

ya Marv that was what i was told, back in 2002 i followed a dream and put 2 pleasure dogs in walker days and i did good, so I think since we have some big hunts right here in our back yard this year i will follow my dream again, i'm huntting a good pleasure dog now that i finished into NTCH with 2 1st and a 2nd, until then she was just a pleasure dog. so i gess time will tell.

some night you want to take a hunt let me know, i injoyed my self the last time we hunted , i will even guide just give me a call.

The coon hound world any more is so small, that I think it is almost impossible to hide a top hound. If he is there, someone that knows a good dog has seen him operate, and told someone else, etc., etc. Someone knows where those good ones are. Like others I have driven a lot of miles to look at a lot of "Whirlwinds" that lacked a little momentum. The problem with a lot of hounds in the hands of pleasure hunters, is they will accept less from a hound; they will let him get a way with things most competition hunters won't tolerate. Sometimes, if the dog is young you can fix the problem; if not, he's still a good "pleasure dog."

I do remember about thirty years ago, Norman Carroll got the "Rattler" dog, down off Tiger Mountain. The dog was whale of a tree dog, did not have a titled dog in his three generation pedigree. He changed hands several times for large sums of money, for the times. Dog won a lot in the early PKC hunts.

EXAMPLE

I HAD ONE THAT I SOLD FOR $100 AND THOUGHT I DID PRETTY GOOD "NOT MY STYLE OF DOG I PLEASURE HUNT" FELLAR I SOLD HIM TO PUSHED HIM A LITTLE SOLD FOR $1500 AND WAS HEART BROKE NEXT FELLAR PUSHED JUST A LITTLE MORE $3500 EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT WHEN IT COMES TO HOW ,WHAT ,WHEN & WHERE AND WHAT THEY THINK MAKES THESE WORLD BEATERS. YOU COULD GO ON AND ON ABOUT WHO HAS WHAT AND THEM GOODINS TIED UP BEHIND BARNS I HAVE SEEN FIRST HAND ALOT OF REASON OF WHY THEY ARE THERE INSTEAD OF BEING PUSHED IN THESE HUNTS IT TAKES A VERY COMPETITIVE PERSON WHO DONT CARE WHO HE PIS3ES OFF TO GET HIS DOG TITLED BECAUSE THE BEST DOG DONT ALWAYS WIN A HANDLER MAKES UP THE BIGGEST PART.
