Yep, I do, and unfortunately so does my dad.lol

My first dog was a redbone with the name Captain Ruby. I was too young to drive so my dad took me hunting for 2 years. In the two years she caught one possum on the ground. Never once treed a single living thing.

Unfortunately, those 2 years was all it took for me to completely break my dad from coon hunting.lol To this day my dad says if he wants to go out and fall down in the woods he prefers to do it in the day7 light.lol

My Dad, Mom & both Grandpa's coon hunted so i was brought up coon hunting... Even before i could walk my Dad carried me to the trees but when i was old enough to get my own dog... I went against my Dad lol and got a bluetick... He was out of Hammer 18 & a double Spanky bred female! I named him Coon Slayin' Blade... He treed his first coon at 4 mths old split from the other dogs! I wish to this day i woulda kept ole Blade but Wayne Risner & Jeff Teague herd about him and asked me to price him... So being young & dumb i did... They came up and looked at him and Blade was gone! Jeff put Blade in 2 hunts putting 2 first on him and in the 3rd hunt Blade got hit and killed on the road!

~ If i woulda kept Blade i prolly would still be hunting Blueticks to this day!

first hound

mine was a bluetick walker cross that a guy gave to me. She was about 8 or 9 years old when i got her. She was a real shy dog. I buddied up to her and she turned in to a good hound. Never was a fast track dog, didnt have a very good nose and wasnt a hard tree dog but she got the job done. Nothing fancy but when she struck i knew it was a coon and most of the time she would get it. Wish to this day that i still had her. She help train many of my pups. She was just a good honest coondog. Rip Ol' Bess.

Yes, it was the late 70's and my first pup was a saddleback, red male. Worthless as a tree dog, so I gave him to my brother who used him to run down coyotes. That dog would run for miles by a cycle or snow sled and when a coyote was jumped he'd could still run it down quick.

Now my first dog that made a coonhound was a little, black gyp. I pulled one drag for her and then just let her go in the woods and she taught me how to coonhunt. She'd not make me happy now but what a nice little dog to come along at the right time to teach a boy to coonhunt.

The first dog I ever owned myself was a grade B&T. He was a good meat dog. Nice stayput treedog. Ran a deer every year.

Posted by Chris Herring on 02-01-2010 04:10 PM:

First one I got was a Redbone puppy from Tony Russell in WV. I saved money from priming tobacco all summer to buy him. My old hunting buddy (my dad don't hunt at all) gave me an old grade Black and Tan to break him with...That red dog started easier than any dog I have ever had, the old grade black dog was slow but accurate...the grade dog died after 8 months (he had a cancer growth when given to me) and the red pup would tree an easy track, I treed a coon every 5 or 6 hunts with that red dog, just enough to keep me interested...then I got my DL and discovered dating....stopped hunting for 8 or 9 years and the red dog, his name was Buckshot, became a family pet.
I still hunt redbones, but have had others over the years...I find I am real picky about breed when I have a good red dog, but when I don't have anything that will tree a coon I am not as picky about breed.....so in between good red dogs I have had a couple of walkers and a borrowed english.... :-)

1st Hound

I was young and a man name Danny Whitehurst came to my house to talk to dad and asked if he would like to go huntin, my dad told him he was busy ,so I asked if I could go , dad said as long as my chores was done it would be ok. He picked me up at dark and we turned this Black & Tan loose and he treed coon after coon that night .I ended up huntin with this man just about all season. I asked dad one night at dinner if I could have a hound and he told me since I always kept up on chores and grades were good I could . This man had told me about a litter of pups he had.One Saturday morning after chores we went to see thenm and they were ready to go , the man ( Danny Whitehurst) told me to pick out a pair and dad agreed. I picked up a male & female , and worked with them all winter and the next spring. I can remember thier ages when they treed the first coon , but it was under a year old, and did one heck of a job.The female got killed after she fell outta a tree at 2 years old and my male would tree coons night after night and several people wanted to buy him. a man wanted to breed his female to my male PR' Sycamore Sam and she had pups. Needless to say I think that line is gone now , but it left me with great memories!!!

The sire to my hound was the great original BO DIDLEY !!!!

Mine was a grade B&T pup I got when I was 16 years old in 1980. I had never coonhunted but my grandpa used to and I heard lots of "stories" and of course I had seen Where the Red Fern Grows.

The first night my pup went to the woods was also my first night in the woods, just the 2 of us. I think I was more scared than the pup.

I later got that pup single registered and he did tree some coons but was nothing special in ability. I entered several nite hunts with him and never won a thing. I wished I'd known more how to hunt him because I think he had alot more ability than I was able to bring out.

To this day I believe he was the loudest dog I have been to the woods with and probably also the widest hunting. It was nothing to pick him up 3-4 miles away. I never raised anything off him but the way things have gone I'd sure like to have some of his mouth in what I'm hunting now.

I had him put to sleep when he was 15 years old and it was one of the 5 toughest days in my life....
