free cast for bobcat?

I have noticed most bobcat hunters up north cast their hounds only after they find a track in the snow.
Why is this?

I hunted bobcats in Oklahoma years ago and would just free cast my hounds in areas where I thought bobcats might be.

Big country, less cat's, helps improve odds

That makes sense.
My dogs were coon/cat dogs then so I would just cast them.
