When to give on on one

How old do they get before you give up on one. Say you have a dog that has trailed, and he has treed with older dogs. They don't do it consistenly, and sometimes they don't do it at all. They just stay with you while the old dog is out hunting

just depends on what qualities you see in the dog and if you think you can bring out the good ones!

i have 1 that has been staring down the barrel of the 22 more than once. i just couldnt get rid of him bc i saw things i liked. i layed him up for the summer and now at 3 1/2 he's finally doing it right on a consistent basis...

I am sure you will get a million types of answers.... most all of them are probably going to be accurate.....Every dog is different...
I had a b&t female that I had since she was old enough to take. Came from some great bloodlines, and hunted with the parents before. She was a grand champion bench dog in successive wins....In fact she never lost a show. Qualified for the world show 3years straight, countless b&t sectionals etc...... Could not get her to do a thing in the woods..... She wouldnt go off with the other dogs, wouldnt even go through water!!!! Tried caged coons, road kill, drags......I tried everything....... I didnt really give up on her because I loved that dog and was a lot of fun to take to shows.... To attempt and shorten the story, one night when she was almost 3yrs old she just went out struck and treed all on her own? We had no clue what dog it was? It was the ****est thing you have ever seen! From that point on she was a coon dog. It just had to happen on her own time.... I had a english bluetick that I got from someone local that was 6months and never been around any sort of hunting..... That dog broke into a hard core coon hunter within a couple drags and a couple nights out with the big boys. (kinda funny to talk about the other dogs as big since he was 100lbs of muscle at 6months and towered over the rest) He was a tree hard and striking animal! Didnt require anything from me except to get him out.

Now I have a b&t who is gonna be two this summer and will track a scent in my back yard like its no body's business, get agressive on a caged coon (again in my back yard) but you take him out into the woods and put him on a cage or drag, or anything and he could care less? He has always been a little immature so I just completely laid off. I was getting frustrated and it wasnt fair to him. I really wanted to get him out with mature dogs, but it has been almost impossible finding people in my area to go out with. I think it helps get the idea across to the dog. I am not going to even consider giving up on him, I know that in due time he will start when he is good and ready, not when I am. Its a matter of patience.... Either your willing to wait or your not and should give him to someone for a house pet or youth that is willing to wait. I have never heard of a dog not starting at some point. I hear people give up all the time though!! Remember its natural to them..... Just my 2 cents!

by year old them dogs better be on it. My life isnt long enough to waste on no dog! You could die tomorrow and id like tgo do it with a decent hound in my kennel!

You didn't say how the pup has been raised how old it is. That makes a lot of differance. If it has been in your back yard or on a chain all it's life. It might get pertective and go nuts at a coon at home and do nothing in the field. Becouse it has no confidence out in the world.
So many variables on how you can raise them that you can't trouble shoot over this thing with out a lot more info. Just keep in mind that how a pup is raised from birth to 12 weaks makes a lot of differance and from then on you can still mess them up pretty easy till they are 1 year old and then it takes a real idiot but can still be done. LOL
They can over come some of the bad raiseing over time. I have a B&T that was left on a chain till 11 months. He was shy of any stranger to the point of hurting himself to get away. After he knew you everything was fine. New nothing about the wood and showed some fear there. Stayed close and wouldn't hunt.
He is 1 1/2 years now, runs,trees and kills his own coon.
THE MAIN THING YOU LEFT OUT IS HOW MUCH YOU HUNT THE DOG. You can't take a dog out once a weak and expect it to learn much. I sold a young dog a while back. The guy hunts her every couple weaks or so. He is in for problems. The little gyp is only 2 and full of fire. She should be hunted atleast 3 nights a weak and atleast 3 drops a night.

Some of em are not ready to do it at a year old but will make nice dogs later on if given the chance. I'd say if one is not doing anything at all at a year and a half it might be time to look for another.

Well i'll give a little more info on the dog. The dog was hunted pretty hard for 6 weeks or so. He ran free and we kenneled on and off for the first year of his life. Lived on a farm and had the run of the land. at about 11 months he was shown his first coon. Had 12 or so coon knocked out to him. At first he liked to get a hold of them. He was hunted with an old dog, did some tracking, a little treeing with them. He actually looked pretty good. Then all of the sudden he acted like he didn't want anything to do with a coon anymore. He got pretty timid and didn't want to do it anymore it seems. Here is the problem, due to my job I am away from home now. I can't hunt him like needs to be done. I would like to get him into someones hands that can do him justice. He does seem a little imature. he is 14 months old now. I am thinking of selling him cheap or maybe even giving him away to someone that will give him a chance. I also though about laying him up until spring and try again.

If he has been running loose lately he may had found more than he wanted on the ground and got whiped. Sounds like he has had to many knocked out to him to fast. Laying him up might be a good idea. They do have a limet and it is easy to try to push to hard. Has he been tore up much or do you shoot them out dead?

he hasn't had anything that wasn't dead. He hasn't been running loose for a good while, just when he was younger. Also on some of those twelve he was tied back and didn't get them. That does make him go crazy. He acts like he wants in there, but when he gets the chance to be in there, he doesn't. Also lately the conditions haven't been real good, very cold 6 or more inches of snow. The old dog has been treeing coon though, but some tough tracks and some dens mixed in. On a good note though, the old dog caught a possum on the ground and killed it, and the pup didn't want anything to do with it either

He needs to be hunted a lot ALONE by someone willing to put in the time with him.

I wouldn't single him out till he will do it with the older dog BUT I wouldn't do anything till the weather is better for him. Then see were he is at. Might try releaseing a couple for him when it warms up a little.

I will keep a pup until it is about 15 months old and if it hasn't shown me anything by then it is done. I also start taking mine around 6 months, as long as they don't get any bad habits like barking behind dogs i will keep taking them. If I have hunted them for nine months and they can't tree a coon they aren't going to cut it. Ther are to many good pups out there to waste 2 or 3 years on one that may never make it.

He really has no interest in caged coons. I have tried him by himself, and he won't leave, so singling him out won't do much yet. I think I will get him to someone who can hunt him, or lay him up to it warms up.

Caged coon and seeing one run into the dark might be two differant things. I think I would be like you though and just get a better prospect.

Forget about the old dog and give him the one on one time. If he can hit on a hot track and tree it himself that will do him more good than the ten with the old dog he has had. You have to be patient and not expect a dog to be treeing his own very much before he is old enough and don't forget -- they have to be hunted regularly. Too many people expect too much too early. Do your own dog training. Don't expect the old dog to do it for you. If the old dog is too good or too fast that pup is not going to know what the heck old dog is doing anyway. Just following the old dog is all that is about.

I had this same problem with a pup from a very well known stud dog and wont put his name on here , but My boy had him from the time he was 9 weeks old and took him outta the pen every day and worked him on creeks, hills, and walked him through the woods. When the pup turned 3 months old he was worked on scent trails and then went on to the caged coon. At the age of 5 months old we took him to the woods and he just hung around us , so we went back home. To sum this up ,,,how much time was spent with him as a pup 8 weeks to now?????
We really think what happened to our pup is that during his puppy days he BONDED to my boy so hard that he didnt want to leave his side,after being told this from a very known man , we left him alone , left him in the pen and only got him out to go to the woods... You will see the results at B&T Days this year in Flora,IL if you get in our cast.
DON'T GIVE UP , just try this first.

I haven't read all these posts so maybe this is being repeated but the way I know it is time to move on is when I'd rather pull anything else out of my kennel besides that pup. When I see that I am leaving him home because I'd rather hunt something else or I'm looking to find someeone else to pack him around for me, that's when I know it's time to be rid of that pup and get going on the next one.

if mine has had a FAIR chance and cant tree their own easy coon by 14 mths im done with them. life is too short and there are way too many pups out there to waste my time with just one!!!

I have one that lived in the house with me from 9 or so weaks old till about 4 months. He runs, trees and kills his own coon and he is 7 months old. He treed his first wild coon at 4 or 5 months I don't remember for sure. I go by when they are ready not by how old they are. The walks in the wood can work both ways but better done than not. Even if a kid does it. They will learn a lot and if they do get to big of bond (if there is such a thing) all you have to do is leave them up for a while to break it. Some do mature a lot slower than others though. I wouldn't want mine bonded with a kid but I will take all the bond I can get to me. Thats just me though I don't think most want it.
