About 40 some years ago
Those walker dogs struck my fancy. Lived them, breathed them and spent way too many nights with them. Over the years and it has been a few, they changed. In the early days the goods ones were good and the sorry ones easy to spot. They would be the one not on the tree and getting into trash problems. Over the years the Walkers learned to play the game well but with one important thing missing, the coon. Many people that can take a simple hike to a tree and look at limbs, get excited about how their dog is treeing and foaming at the mouth. Let me put a machette in your hand and you chop your way through the swamps to your dog and you will feel different about just seeing limbs and not eyes.
Anyway about six months ago out of being bored I set out to find a good Redbone. You know kind of like chasing the girl that doesn't want anything to do with you. Might never get lucky but you can still dream about how pretty she is.
Why?
I have chosen mtn. curs for a couple of reasons. I've hunted or owned every hound. None ever really satisfied me like my curs do now. I like them because they hunt not to close but not a mile away either. They naturally come and check in with me, about every 20 minutes or so. They're a smaller frame dog, so they don't wear out as quick. Being they're smaller they don't eat as much, so the feed bill is less. Very smart and easily trained. I love my cur dogs, and wouldn't go back to a hound.

Just bought me anothat walker pup 2day..
Didn't pick the breed, picked the pup I wanted and it happened to be that breed.

Been following these walker dogs since 1983,and love every min of it !!!!
http://minnesotastatecoonhunters.webs.com/
Use SunSpot Lights, so bright its like the sun came out at night !!!
I had redbones, blueticks, mountain curs, a treeing tennesse brindle, and plotts. Only one made a coon dog. It was a plott. He died young, and my second plott wasn't worth a hoot.
I then tried a walker pup named Hickory Hill Finisher. His call name was Dan (of course after Dan in a Where a Red fern Grows).lol That pup taught me more about coon hunting then any other dog. He got hit and killed by a car at 6 years old. He was only bred once, but as I buried him I made a promise to keep his descendants as part of my family as long as I humanly could.
That dog meant enough to me that I am determined to keep that promise! So I guess ya can say that i didn't pick my dogs they sort of picked me.

i sold all my hounds about a month ago due to losing my hunting due to clear cutting it i have owen every breed of hound there is including mixed breeds i had my best luck with redbones i kept timberchopper and had a couple bleaksely bred they were easy to start was tree minded at a early age never had them to run trash had one female to tree a opussum one nightwhen she was about 11/2 give her a whoppin with it never treed another thats the reason i kep red dogs i did try a couple of the mgill bred red pups didnt turn out very good only bad experince i had with red dogs if i ever get back in to coonhunting again it will be the redbone breed
I started with plott..Then a B&T..Then I went English..From there I went to a bluetick..After that I got me a walker and aint left the breed yet..I could have saved lots of time if I'd have went right with the walker..

why did u pick
i hunt english dogs and they dont run trash. i hunted with wakers and blue ticks seems they want to ran deer any thingthey want to. i want to hunt coon not deer and fox. that just me tho. u asked
My first were redbones, next came a B&T. I've had blueticks (one was one of my best ever), english, plotts, and walkers. I have had many good B&Ts and love the breed. I beleive a coondog is a coondog, no matter what color, but a pup at my house belonging to me will be B&T.

breed picking
when i was a kid my nextstore neighbor had a rottweiller that would tree coons at night and squirels and the mail man in the day time.the closest thing to a rottweiller the ukc would let me comp. hunt was a black & tan.the ones i have now are not trashy at all they wont even look at the mail man!!!!!
Years ago I got me a black female tried to get her to hunt but just packed along. Then a man give me a Pac man female and Little man female to train here. The Red bone was awesome Well crystal never did turn out But one night my black female just turned on was with black dogs for years pleasure hunting.
Comp hunted a nice Black male for years ( great dog poor handler LOL ) Well he passed I went on a search for a dog. I found a very good Blue male. Put a win on him while hunting him I was asked to hunt a female walker and try to sell her. She was so nice I bought her, ( go figure she was bred) At least they were full blooded. Good coon dogs come in many colors.

I started coon huntin at the age of 4 yrs. and ended every night being carried out of the woods like a sack of feed. Absolutely loved the sport then and still do and it was always behind walker dogs and always will be. I just turned 43 years old today and I feel walkers fill the bill pretty well for me to follow them for 39 years! I have seen good ones in every breed but I enjoy being on the team that everyone loves to hate or is it hates to love?

I have owned NOTHING but an English my whole life. An elementry school friend give me an English pup,(my very first dog) when we were in the 6th grade, that would have been 1967. Had to talk my father into letting me have it, as he had redbones & black & tans, & foxhounds. The dogs I hunt today goes back to that very first English Hound.
I never changed breeds because pappy nor anybody else I have hunted with over the years ever embarrassed me night in and night out to the point that I felt they had more than I did.
I just liked these dogs style & consistancy a little more that the other breeds I have hunted. Thats not to say I haven't seen other breeds that operate very well, they just were not strong enough to convince me I was in the wrong breed!!
btt
i did not pick the breed but i tried them all and the walker dog keep me so i keep them but i enjoy aney breed of a dog that is a coon dog but for me i just like the walkers the best.they are good and bad in them all but i onley raise walkers when i raise a litter for my sealf to hunt but i would hunt aney coller of a good dog
