bobcat advice
What's the best way to break a dog off of bobcats? To be honest, I'm not a big fan of shocking my dogs and I also don't want to risk shocking him off of a boar that is jumping the tree. More often than not, you are not going to see what it is that is jumping, and if I was going to shock him, I would want to be 100% certain that is for a cat. Would negative reinforcement on a hide work? or, would it need to be a live cat? Any advice would be welcome... and no, I'm not going to just cull the dog. He is a GREAT young coondog, just recently started having trouble with cats and I want to nip it in the bud before it gets out of hand.
thanks in advance for any help you can give,

I've never tried to trap a cat before, and, I've heard its almost impossible if you're not right on top its normal travel routes. Bobcats are something I've never paid much attention to til now. Guess I've got some serious scouting to do.

That is true but the sound and the moving brid makes it a lot easier. They like to kill and eat fresh not old dead stuff. They like place where there are song brids and rabbit like briar.
if you have the time drive these country roads we have and find one crossing the road turn him out when he gets it up and moving let him have it

I have owned 2 good cat dogs that ran bobcats with all the time.matter of fact thats all I used them for.
One way you can tell if it is bobcat or not is by the amount of time it stays treed. Usally if the dog leaves the barking like he's looking @ it right before you get to the tree it's a cat. A cat will tree and catch its air, then bail out when he see's your headlight coming and run like hell for 30 min. and tree again. I have never trapped one , but I can tell you how to catch your dog redhanded if he likes to run them. cats usally will feed all night long & layup at daylight. With this being said dont turn your hound lose until 1hr before day break. if he strikes a cat, the cat will be full allready from hunting all night and should tree quick. let the dog continue to tree for hr or so after day break and you can walk up the tree and look at your cat.
ps, If he is running bobcats would you be willing to sell him?
Donald
God bless

Give him a chance to try and chase a barn cat, if he gets after them put the juice to him. If that does not work you can send him up here to me and I could maybe get him broke off of coon.
How do you know he's running a cat? Has he treed them, and you've have seen them, or you just feel like he's running cat. Tom

I have actually seen him on one, and I've seen the tracks where he's crossed a road with one.

Turn loose in the early morning BEFORE light. If you know your dog is running a bobcat wait until after light of day to go to your dog when he trees. Bobcats are more prone to stay treed after light than during darkness. Corrective measures can be administered at that point.....
