Could someone familiar with mountain lions give me a description of mountain lion tracks or maybe post a picture of a track with good detail. Lastnight a friend from pennsylvania and I were hunting in a pretty remote area of south western NY. and we found huge tracks in the snow, we both know what they look like but I guess neither of us want to admitt what we believe they were made by. I have a mounted bobcat and I measured his front paw and it's just shy of 3 inches wide, the track we saw was over 5 inches wide and had a lot longer stride than a bobcat. I don't want to get a story started but, we were both stone sober, excellent eyesight, and it was big and round like a house cat on steroids! It definately was not bear, or any type of canine. Thanks for any input.

If you've seen bobcat tracks before, a lion track pretty much looks the same, just a lot bigger.

THANKS! Like I said, I don't wanna start a tale but I know what we were looking at belongs to a very large cat species. Who knows ya know, I still don't believe we have a population of big cats in this geographical area but I suppose one could travel through. I have been telling everyone that says they saw a big cat, heard one or whatever that they are full of s---! Now maybe I am! I guess until I tree one and witness it with my own eyes I will just figure I saw some mighty big tracks of a large animal and nothin more.

There is no way to go and look at this track again because we have had 24 hrs. of steady rain and above freezing temps. I truly believe these pictures are exactly what we were looking at Saturday night. Someone is always claiming they have seen a cat in this area and now I guess I can't doubt them. I think it would be kinda cool to tree one some night and get some pictures! Maybe I'm nuts!!! Here's some additional info from a man in Canada.

"The back pad is got to have a clear measure of 1 7\8 - 2 1\2 inches with the 3 lobes at the back of the pad. A good tom will always measure 2 1\4 with a walking stride of 19 to 23 inch. Females at the smaller end of the scale. Never seen a female with an average stride over 19. If a cougar trots, its stride will get longer and wolf like but this does not happen often."
