red fox?
Will a red fox run off or kill coons. I live on the outskirts of town near the city compost pile. Two years ago there were literally dozens of coon on the side of the road every night. Along with coons there were numerous cats, and the local animal shelter would leave cat food along the side of the road. Then I started seeing a red fox, and all of a sudden the coons became rare to see. Now there are no coons or cats and the fox is rarely seen anymore also. I was told by some old timers that a coon will run off a red, but after what I have seen I think otherwise.

i dont think a fox would kill a coon here in wv we didnt have anything for them to eat in my area they just seem to disapper i lost the only big woods where i could tree a coon i got rid of all my hounds if they dont have anything to eat they will go where they have food jmo
Sounds more like coyotes to me. They'll kill fox and cats. I'm sure they would probably take care of a coon to if they could get him before he can get to a tree.
I have never seen or heard a coyote near here. I don't know what else it could be. It might be a coincidence that they started thinning out when the fox showed up, and the fox disappeared when the coons and cats were gone, but it doesn't seem likely. Maybe the fox just took the coons food source. I can't hunt the area because it is still in city limits and I'm not sure who owns it, but I'm curious anyway.

I am almost positive it isn't coyotes, surely someone would have seen one if they were around. I'm not talking about a rural area, there are houses, a park, a Lowes, and girls softball fields close and I would think someone would have seen some kind of sign of a yote. The fox may or may not have killed the coons but if not I think it took the food supply. My boys used to watch the fox every night, but we haven't seen it for a while now.

I dont think so ... around here an average adult red fox weighs probably around 20lbs ... some might get a little bigger but not much .... Our coon here probably run a little bigger than in the southern states ... an avg large coon is 25 to 30 lbs and we have taken 35 & 40 lb coon .... A fox is not going to take on a coon ... not unless he is ..... unbalanced!
