True Sportsmanship
We all hear all the time about cheaters and corner cutters in Nite hunts and plenty of it goes on everywhere. But what are some acts of true honesty and sportsmanship have you witnessed with people.. Here's one that I re-call from a recent cast...
Recently I was in a cast where 2 dogs minused out in the first hour and left me and another guy alone in the cast to finish it.
We cut our dogs loose and he got 1st strike and our dogs split treed about 300 yards apart with time running out. We agreed to each go to our own dogs and leash them , then meet up to score our trees.I could faintly hear his dog treeing in the distance as I went to mine.
I went to mine and leashed him and waited on the guy to come. I knew he had 1st strike and would beat me if we saw his coon. The guy came and we saw and scored my coon and I said '' lets go look for yours now.
The guy said '' there is no need to go look for mine because my dog moved about 30 yards between two trees and he needs minused...'' I just about fell over and died right there from shock... There is No way I would have known that if he had not admitted it. He shook my hand and said '' congraulations''..
We went back to his dog and he had a coon and another coon was sitting in the tree the dog had left about 30 yards away.
I don't think I've saw that much honesty and sportsmanship in a man in my life..... The man has my full respect from now on.

That's wonderful! Honesty will let you sleep better at night, that's for sure. Good for him for stating the truth, even though it wasn't to his benefit. Wish more people would set that example.

i've never seen any one more honest than a hunter last night @ burnt chimney Va. , than Junior Mattix. he will tell you to minus his dog faster than any judge can even question it. very honest hunter/ handler.

I was just a youngster, at the Battle of the Breeds for the first time, huntin a 15 month old dog. I drew Rod Rose with his Rosey female. We got treed in a quarter mile deep, we were probably 200 yards off when I heard mine open to the right probably 50 yards or so. I told Mr Rose to minus my dog, as he was off the tree. He said he had heard my dog as well, and he wasnt going to minus him....he said I would see why when we got to the tree. They were treed right on the edge of a creek bank, my dog was in the creek, treeing right below the tree but there was a hollow coming out of the creek about 50 yards away that carried my dogs mouth up and out. He showed me my dog treed, and the hollow coming out of the creek, and told me not to be so quick to minus my dog. I was highly impressed with Mr Rose' sportsmanship, especially since I was leading the cast at that point. (Incidentally he won that cast, lol)

Thats great to hear. True sportsman do exist they are just getting fewer and fewer.
I don't think you need to post his name, because that is what we are supposed to do. But I do think a handshake, a thank you and a recommendation to the MOH that the fellow was an honest sportsman is in order.
