A suggestion to "newcomers"

For everyone that's been here a while, we have all seen the "which dog food", "what live trap bait", and the whole gambit of "feeder bucket" questions that come along about once a month.

It is always someone who just found their way to this site, and are not aware that those questions are asked time and time again.....

As a moderator of several message boards, and an administrator of yet another one, I would like to share some common message board and forum etiquette to light.

One of the most important tools for any message board, and especially one as large and frequently used as this one is....is the search function.

Everyone has the ability to search, and before you ask a question I would suggest that you do a search. This is easily accomplished by selecting "search" from the buttons in the upper right hand corner of the message board

This brings up the search screen. This may be a little bit intimidating if you are not used to searching.....

Simply type in your question in the "Search By Keyword" box. Try it...type in "wormer" or "Feeder bucket"

To limit your search, you can search specific forums in the lower left hand corner. You can search by User Name, By date, and you can select the order of the display.(from newer results to older, or from older results to newer)

Give it a try! You will be amazed at the wealth of information that has been shared over the life of this message board......

Great in formation and suggestion Oak Ridge. I'll have to try that myself.

One other suggestions for newbies. Read the stickies first before you post!

The SEARCH feature is your friend.

Did you do a search?

I just saw a great post that was re-posted by Hobo on that very topic.

But my page is green, your screen shot is with gray, are we running the same software?

I jest. Good post Joe, often times I forget the search function. This message board is filled with great info, most of the time. If people hang around long enough, they'll see who to glean it from and who not to.

still

This only a tool that is limited (squall) for example give 30 post that has the word squall used in it . Not a single one tell me how to use it ,or what it is . It is easy to use the one at the bottom of the page has less cra*** to shuffel through also u can type their name an only get their post started or commented on not just a word used in a post .JMO

what does this have in common

with squaller did a search squaller get 1-25 of 333
GrNtCh hardtymes red taco
Queen of Diamonds is MISSING
Dual Gr. Natural Smokey River Rebel
Grntch Grch Jones Raisin Cane
and so and so on .
I like to post a dog food ? even if its been asked before to mainly get new info or opioins . And not have to sort through all of that like above that has no reasoning to me its like using Bing or Ask jeeves, or them other search engines that give 100 pages of *** to sort through for an hour and then still dont get what you want . So I hope this opens some doors to maybe help someone do a search . Thanks again for your service & time .

Man it's a CHOICE!

Join words with AND, OR and NOT to control your search in more detail.
Add asterisks (*) to use wild cards in your search.

Sometimes you get answers to any question depending on how you ask it!

The forum is indexed by single words, anything over four letters, and if you only search for one word, you are going to get a lot of "trash" responses. There are currently 1,197,017 posts in the message board, so it's going to contain a lot of words....learn to use the search and it's just like any other tool. You don't use a sledge hammer to turn a screw.....use your tools right and make your job easier!

Do a search for blow and squaller and tree

Has the dog food issue been beaten to death yet? Haven't seen one of those threads in about 3 days.

By popular demand, I'm creating this thread as a quick how-to guide on posting pictures on the board. I'm stickying it so it won't get lost like all of the other threads on this subject. So, without further ado...

HOW TO POST PICTURES ON THE UKC BOARD

Step 1: Get A Picture

First of all, you need to have a picture in a digital format. If it's in your computer already, then you can move on to...

Step 2: Host the Picture

You need to have your picture hosted somewhere. What we mean by this is that your picture needs to be uploaded somewhere onto the web, such as on your own web site, a friend's web site or one of the free picture hosting services, such as hunt101.com, photobucket.com or imagestation.com.

Personally, I prefer Photobucket.com, since it's free and very straightforward to use. If you do host your picture there, just follow the steps on their web site to create an account and to upload your photos.

Once your picture is uploaded...

Step 3: Find Out The Picture's URL

Find out your picture's web address. This is the URL you need to type to view your picture. A simple way to get this is to load up the page your picture is on, right-click the picture and choose "properties" from the menu that pops up. What you need will look something like this "http://www.ukcdogs.com/res/banners/main.jpg".

On Photobucket, all you really need to do is to copy the line next to the "Img" label underneath the picture you want to display. It should look something like this:

[img]http://i55.photobucket.com /albums/a111/youraccountname/yourpicture.jpg[/img]

Paste that line into your message board post and you're all set.

If you're not using Photobucket...

Step 4: Post The Picture

Now that you have the URL, you can inflict it on your fellow UKC board members. All you have to do is type in the url, surrounding it with the [img] and [/img] tags, so it looks this:

[img]http://www.ukcdogs.com/res/banners/main.jpg[/img]

The board should then display the photo automatically whenever the post is viewed, like this:

Keep in mind, however, that if your photo is removed from the hosted site, it'll cause a broken link on this board (the picture won't show up).

But if we quit asking the same question week after week, what would we talk about? This forum would get pretty boring if noone ever asked anything cause they found all the answers in the search. Besides I like telling the same stories over and over. The lies get bigger every time!!!LOL!

searches - I dont like the fact that you can't search for anything less than 4 characters. when a lot of posts include 2-3 letter words its hard to search using the *...keep getting a lot of trash.

why input NC, UKC, etc in a thread if we can search for it???? its just frustrating.

That

Is what I was saying on this post earlier. It is just alot easier to search using the box at the bottom of page ,or just simply ask as a new thread and in amatter of seconds someone will help. It is alot of HASSEL to use what they describe as a tool . JMO
