Top Ten Show Dogs question

How many of you "show people" push for "top ten" points. I know you really rack them em at a big show with a win, but do you attend alot of local shows showing a Grand Champ with the main intent of picking up points? Just wondering what it takes to get all those points if you don't win a "really big" show.
Thanks

Some like being at the top of the list so to speak but in reality there isn't anything extra there to win. If my dog or dogs is on the list I do get a kick out of seeing our names there , sometimes for 12 months out of the year. Almost like free ad's as long it comes along like a bonus for doing what you like any way. If you do well at the bigger shows you will just naturally pile up some points. If you're chasing Purina points and doing well enough to stay in the game you can't help but run up a good top 10 score. I don't see to many just chasing it locally like they did in it's early days.

While I got my one good typing finger warmed up I'd like to express an opinion about the top ten.
At the end of the year the top ten of each coonhound breed is eligible to show at the Winter Classic to be THE breed rep to enter the top ten at the Premier, one winner/breed to go. I really think for the BENCH show coon dogs there should be something more like the overall top ten coonhound decided right there at the Winter Classic. I never show in the top ten there because I never intend to show at the Premier and see no reason to mess up some one's plans who really wants to. It would be nice to really settle it for the coonhounds at the WC and then let the breed winners go on to the Premier if they want. On top of this the bench winners often are not even competitive at major conformation shows any way due to the difference in training and handling. Most likely the Top Ten coonhounds from UKC conformation shows ( no bench's ) are the ones that should be going to the Top Ten at the Premier .
Sorry for all the wind Chris.

I agree with what Dale said.

We did run top ten points one year at local shows, but we were running for (at that time, no longer exists) state show dog of the year also. Depending on your breed (we had a walker), it takes lots of shows to do it that way and all you end up with (other than your name in Bloodlines every month) is a certificate. It was nice to see our name in the magazine, but I wouldn't ever do it again. Both we and the dog were sick of showing by the end of the year. And, since we don't show conformation shows like Premier, it just isn't worth the time and effort. So now, if one of the dogs makes the list, fine.....if not, that's fine also.

Thanks for the replies

Dale, Your idea for the top ten sounds very reasonable. Have you given UKC a shout about it? Would it increase entries at the local level, in order to get on that top ten, for a chance then to "show off" at Winter Classic for the overall winner? Again, I think its a good idea. Other opinions? Todd or Allen care to voice an opinion?

Some of us talked about it just conversationally at the Premier when we were there watching a friend show some dogs. Don't know if it would matter on the local level or not. It's possible some would try to get in the top ten for something a little more at WC when the Premier may not be in their plans. I remember some were upset when it was changed so you had to travel to the WC and win just to enter the Top Ten at the Premier. If you live in the north as we do it means you have to travel at least 1800 miles round trip and win your breed in the top Ten at the WC just to be able to enter the Top Ten finals which was only about 130 miles away from home at Kalamazoo. This year it moves to Richmond, IN. but still much closer than Albany, Ga.. The other side of that coin is many of the Top Ten dogs are already at the WC. If it was going to be simple I'd say the dog who's #1 in the breed standings at the end of the year is already the breed winner to go to the top Ten finals without having to go to the WC to decide it. That scenario might increase entries locally among those who might want a shot at it without the long trip to the WC in Jan. but it's hard to get enough points on a local level.
Locally we have a lack of competition for Grand Champions except for State hunts and a few breed sectionals and sometimes a actual large breed Days close by. We campaign til we make grand and then find no where to go from there unless we like and can travel. Besides that it becomes clear usually on the local level what dog is hot at the time and you usually don't enter when you 're 98% sure you can't win with what you have at the time. Thats were the big shows are nice with large trophys and pictures for winning your breed categories.
Changing times though , can never tell what might come up. I remember around here when nobody wanted a hunt after the kill season started. Now they seem to go year round.

at one time wasn't the top ten used to choose the purina winner? why not do it again? it may do away with some of the politics in the shows.

Top Ten

I thought I remembered that the top ten used to be sponsored by Pedigree? Maybe I am wrong I don't know. Now there is no sponsor. Is this way it appears to go by the wayside?

it was sponsored by pedigree...I remember that.

blueticking:it " break the pts dwn Cynthia gr get 4pts per dog beat reg 1.purina race now is what 1 show up."

what do you mean? I was referring to how the purina shows have gotten so that folks NOT running it will not enter becuase they feel they do not have a chance as a lot of it is political and who you know. I mean there was a scandal at the end of last year.

all I was referring to was that I think it would put more dogs on a more level field. yes, there will be one that stands out amongst them, but not every dog will go to any event with 10 other grands. they can 'turtle' their way in....one dog at a time.

Yep, Fancy. Sorry, to many years and too many dogs running thru my head. LOL

I think he means that a good dog and dedicated handler/owner who can & will travel to the Purina events has the advantage in the Purina race. The money (bench) comes no where near off setting the expense of doing it. The painting is the real prize and the fun of doing it but it wears on you before it's over. The dog food at todays prices is a bonus.

The Top Ten points are set up as they are because usually they are more reg. open dogs in shows than ch. and Grands. Trying to level the field for earning points. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

I really think having one more pick at WC to pick a overall Top Ten BENCH show dog for Coonhounds would be more beneficial to most of us there in attendence. Still let the breed winners go to the Premier top ten if they want to. As it is you don't get much for entering the Top Ten run offs at WC if the Premier isn't in your plans.

Dale, you should try it this year. Premier is in Richmond, IN...sorta close to home!!!

The dog I had in this year I gave to a friend so I haven't got one for this year. (Rim Fire)
Actually Kalamazoo was about 100 miles closer and I've been there a few times to visit ,walk around and watch some of the stuff going on . I enjoy being there but not the conformation shows. Training for gaiting must have a hitch to it I've never been able to learn because I'm the worlds worst trainer for it.
