-- How many Breeders.... (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=324485)

How many Breeders....

How many breeders offer a guarantee with the pups they sell? I offer a 1 yr. guarantee with all my pups. If you aren't happy with your pup after a year, you either get your money back or a replacement pup. I figure if I can't stand behind what I breed and sell, I have no business doing it.

To date, I have had no pups returned to me. Any thoughts?

As a buyer I wish "they" would do one or the other.
As a "breeder" fortunately I breed for myself not the public.

If they were all raised and trained the way they are suppose to be then this would work. Unfortunatly it doesnt happen this way.In one year, you have no idea what that dog has been through.

Posted by EnglishBabe on 01-09-2010 08:03 PM:

Even if they do nothing with the dog in 1 yr. You give them their money back, start the dog and resell it for more money. It's a win-win situation. Although I do state in my agreement that if the dog has been abused or neglected, the contract is null and void. If it is returned in bad health, the contract is also void. I still say a guarantee is better then none.

I have offered a guarantee for yrs. I have taken back only 5 pups/young dogs. Why becouse the people I sold them to never did anything with them as far a training or the kids went in other directions.
So now I kind of screen my buyers first , sometimes you get the feeling over the phone what they will do in the first 5 minutes of talking to them.

I wouldn't say its a dumb question at all.

For litters I've produced in the last 3 years:

I offer a 1 yr. written guarantee. I've got 1 pup back that the person didn't like. Within 6 mos. she had two 1st place wins and then she got hung in a fence and died.

I also offer a written, purchase price back incentive on pups that make NtCh before they are 3 years old. I've made good on 3 pups that did that.

All this, plus the price I charge is designed to attract a buyer who takes coonhunting seriously and will put the pup in the woods.

This is a typical litter (except for size) I produce.

Good to read that others believe in what they breed and sell, also. As for the not doing anything at a year old, as I said, take the pup back and start it yourself. In the end your further ahead.

I also like that purchase price thing for NITECH incentive, very good idea, might just have to add that one myself.

I bought a blue english female off of Midnight Swamp Racket a year and a half ago with a warranty. The warranty was going with other dogs at 8 months and treeing her own coon a 1 year and if you made her a night champion before she was 2, he would send you $200.00 back. It wont be long and we will see if I get my $200.00.

I've had a few people ask me if I offer a guarantee. If they ask I usually tell them I'll replace the pup. I don't think that I've had to replace any.

The problem with giving a guarantee is that how do you know the person getting the pup is doing their part?

I don't. In fact, I will probably assume they didn't do their part.

There are 3 possibilities with a pup thats sold. Either it didn't get hunted, its ruined, or a dud.

If it didn't get hunted, I can hunt it usually for as little as a month and sell it to someone that will take it on. I come out ahead.

If they ruined it, then not much I can do. I lost the value of the pup due to the buyer but at least I have the chance to keep this pup from getting traded around and neglected the rest of its life. I won't sell a pup to this buyer, again.

If it turns out to be a dud, then I need to know that as a breeder and its my responsibility to take care of it.

I'm not in it to get rich but I'm not in it to go broke, either. With that in mind I'm going to make enough money off the ones that do make it that the 1-2 per litter that might not aren't going to hurt me.

John D has the best approach to breeding that I've seen. I wish that every breeder would be as responsible. The link he posted is a good example of an ad that has good solid information.

Its easy to let a couple of dogs have sex and sling the pups out there for a price and forget about it. The countryside is littered with those kind of dogs.

Wow, I didn't think that someone else thought the same as me. John, good to see there are those that stand behind what they breed and sell. People like you are in it to better the breed. I like that.

We guarantee our pups to be healthy. All pups come with a written health certificate from a licensed vet. We also will buy back or replace any pup that a buyer is unhappy with. To date only bought one back because the folks were moving. She was given to a kid to get started, and made the best dog he ever owned. Our problem is we haven't been able to find a buyer willing to sell us one back because they made good dogs.

I'm not a major breeder, and if I make a cross it's because I wanted a pup out of the two dogs. It's like I told a friend of mine the other day....there are just two many good females being bred to keep on fooling with raising my own pups. If I was a full time breeder I would try and provide some kind of incentitive to attract the type of customers I wanted. I like John D's incentitive....reading his add makes me want a pup from him LOL!!!

I ONLY RAISE ABOUT 2 LITTERS A YEAR. I ALWAYS OFFER A MONEY BACK GARRENTEE ON PUPS AT 1 YEAR OLD TO BUYER ONLY & PAPERS MUST BE IN ORDER & DOG MUST BE HEALTHY.
NO REPLACEMENT PUPS !!

ONLY HAD ONE PUP RETURNED. HAD A GUY SEVERAL YEARS AGO BOUGHT A PUP. GUY CALLED ME SEVERAL TIMES TALKING ABOUT HOW MUCH HE LIKED THE PUP & HOW GOOD IT WAS DOING. ONE DAY JUST AFTER THE DOG WAS 1 YEAR OLD HE CALLED & WANTED TO KNOW IF I'D BUY HIM BACK HE DIDNT SUIT HIM. I TOLD HIM I JUST BOUGHT A NEW DOG & GIVE ME 2 WEEKS & I'D COME GET HIM. (I DIDNT OFFER MONEY BACK THEN) I WALKED UP TO HIS PEN THE DOG HIT THE GROUND PISSING ALL OVER HIS SELF. I GIVE HIM HIS MONEY BACK, TOOK THE DOG HOME BUDDIED UP WITH HIM & REALLY SPENT ALOT OF TIME WITH HIM. IN A WEEK HE WASNT AFRAID OF ANYTHING. TOOK HIM HUNTIN 2ND TIME OUT HE RUN & TREED. MADE A PRETTY GOOD DOG NOTHING SPECIAL BUT WOULD HUNT, RUN & TREE COONS.

NO YOU DONT HAVE ANY CONTROL OVER HOW A PUP IS RAISED !! ALL YOU CAN DO IS TAKE A MANS WORD THAT HE GAVE THE DOG A FAIR CHANCE.

I am more of a consumer than a breeder.

If I get a pup that dosent work for me, Im probably not going to want another even if its free.

Just because a breeder has never given a refund dosent nessisarily mean every pup has made it, or that every customer is nessisarily satisfied.

I am a consumer too and I think if a buyer isn't happy with these kind of people standing behind there dog I wouldn't want to be the one selling them one.

we over a gurantee here also

we do gurantee our pups for 1 yr. to show interest if given a chance will replace with a pup or buy back.
we like all the feed back we can get on crosses we have made and we offer referances of people who are hunting dogs we raised.

Posted by calblu on 01-12-2010 01:21 AM:

The guarantee we offer to puppy buyers is that we'll refund the puppy price for any puppy born here for its entire life for any reason (doesn't matter what the reason is or how old they are). Transport back to us is the buyer's responsibility.
We will only offer a puppy replacement option in very rare situations.

We've had to buy a couple back and we've had several returned as older dogs. That's been perfectly fine with us. We encourage it and it's usually in a written contract anyhow! We raise very few litters (haven't had one since '07) and only have litters when we plan to keep at least one puppy. We can't raise them all and we don't expect they'll grow up to satisfy everyone, so it's nice to get some of them back.
We don't expect to make money from our dogs. They're a hobby, not a business for us.
We don't breed to/from dogs that can't hunt and we like them to also have a show title.

Our policy right now is to try and only raise Performance litters. Hopefully that's enough incentive to buyers to get out there and try to make their purchase price back. (Thank you UKC for keeping this an affordable program for those of us who live where there's no money to be made in coondogs!)
