Coon boxes

has anyone made any boxes for coon to den in?
if so, what is the ideal size of box and opening size and location.
also what would be the best material to use and best method to attach it to a tree.

thanks

Marv, its been awhile since I've been up there but surely you haven't exterminated all those coons, to where you need den boxes? Maybe you've got some new power I haven't heard about? Just kidding.

i used some scrap 2 x 12 pieces treated lumber. there's a site on the net, just do a search for coon shealter. i cut a 3" x 4" hole near the top of one side with the top of the hole arched. i cut the top and bottom parts of the hole at an angle to make water run out of or away from the entrance. my were nearly two feet long. i don't know if anything has used it because i put them up recently.

Elvis,

Anything 10-12" square and 25-36"long with a 4-6"hole near the top will work well. In addition place the box with a southern or southeastern facing exposure.

With all the logging going on around here that might be a good idea. I guess I thought the coons from one area would move like across the road to an unlogged area but there are only so many dens. Those already claimed would be off limits to intruders I guess. If given a place to den would more coon stay in one area if there was ample food or would they fight for dominance and still only so many stay? Never thought about coon boxes, put out lots of corn to try and keep them around though.

Chris,

Yes, you can keep more coons in an area with more denning sites. There was a study done way back in the 1940's that proved that ample denning sites can help manage coon populations.

Coons are very resourceful and will use woodchuck holes, house attics, fireplaces, sewers, tile systems, barns and other out buildings. Old abandon farm houses are like a meca for coons.

Elvis,
Let us know how they come out and what the results are down the road.
A friend of mine has often brought up the idea of making something similar. He thought of using a synthetic or composite material or mold so that it actually looked like a tree and wouldn't be disturbed anyone.
Not sure if you're familiar with the "Stump feeder" but it is made out of a composite material for feeding wildlife. It looks just like a stump.
Something at least as big as a 55 gal drum or 2 stacked.
Maybe you could get "the boss" to finance this idea and market them. I know the average coonhunter probably couldn't afford them though.

I have used my Climbing Tree Stand to Place 55 gal Plastic Drums on the Trees .. I screw the 55 gal drum to a Pressure Trated 2"x 6" then Lag Screw the 2 x 6 to the tree..

A 5" dia hole is driled in the drum and place the Hole near the tree surface.. You can use a cut Tire Tread for a cover over the Hole and screw a piece of Tire Tread strip on the Inside of the drum from the hold to near the borrom of the Drum so its easy for them to climb out.. You also want to drill 1/2" drains in the Bottom of the drum..

Now put about 2" of pea stone in the bottom of the drum and Dust with Pig "Lice" Powder.. Then Place 3" of Wood Shavings, this will keep Fleas/ticks off the coon for a long time Years of litters..

Now I have put up both 30 gal Drums and 55 gal drums and they will use Both .. So what ever sizes you can get your hands on works well.. They do like the Dark Durms Better than the White !!

Easy to hang with 2 fokes and a pulley to Place up in the trees

Cheep and will last 30 years or more !!

I made some years ago from scrap 1x12's. They were about 24 inchs deep, the door was just a 6 inch gap at the top. and a 6 inch overhang over the door. They were used very soon after being put up and most lasted for years.

I also made two out of a rear tractor tire that are used. I cut the tire in to two pieces, cut each piece through the side wall (at about 2/3s) and folded. Bolt the ends together, the long end creates the opening and the top.

been doing this for years now the most used boxes i have built were 12x16 inches 18 inches deep make the hole on the front side near the wall thats being fastened to the tree so they climb off the tree into the bos also very impotant is to make sure there are drain holes in the bottom for the urine and rain water to run out if you don't put the darin holes in you will lose babies from becoming weti put wood chips about 4 inches deep to insulate the box the females will bring nest materials in the box, i used to take them down in warm weather till i found they make permanent dens in them.
i also put them the height of a tree stand ladder off the ground so i can check them. you will be amazed at how you can buil your population up in just 2 or 3 years.
to get the coon to find them put a feeder up in the area to draw them in.
i used to use wood nail kegs but there hard to come by now they pack them in cardboard boxes mostly these days

Been thinking about this for awhile too. Found a site on the net that even sells them-woodlandhabitat.com. You guys that use them a lot, do you tree on them very often? My only concern is that if putting them in a woods I plan to guide a cast to, are the coon going to head straight to them? I think I'm going to build some soon.

There is another aspect of coon boxes that can definately be helpful. Knowing where an active den tree with little ones is a great way to start pups and young dogs without the aid of a feeder.

MAN MADE COON DENS

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE HEARD OF MAKING A COON DEN. I NEVER THOUGHT OF IT REALLY. IF I HAVE A PLACE THAT THE COON POPULATION IS LOW, I'D SAY THERE IS A FEW COONS HITTIN THE FEEDER. WOULD IT HELP THE COON POPULATION IF I PUT 3 OR 4 OF THESE COON DENS UP IN A PLACE? IF TREEING IN THEM IN THE HUNTS I COULD JUST TIE A ROPE TO A DOOR AND OPEN IT WHEN THEY TREE.LOL! YO KNOW WE BEAT,BANG, AND SQALL LIKE CRAZY WHEN THEY TREE IN A DEN IN THE HUNTS.PULLING THE ROPE WOULD BE A PLUS OR A MINUS. NO QUESTION ABOUT IT. THANKS
