How does a dog check a tree in water?

Always assumed in a perfect worlda dog would follow a track to a tree. check the tree to see if the track went on and then would settle. How does a dog know if the coon came down and went on if he's in a foot of water? I guess he would have to wind him.

if the water is pretty still the scent of the coon will float on top. Treed plenty of coons in the swamps of La,Fl MS, & Al never seemed to bother the dogs a bit.

I have treed a few swampers myself, just curious as to how they do it.

with wet feet!!!!!

most of the scent the dogs trail (in my opinion!!!!!!!) is in the air whether on ground or water... when i was younger i was really amazed to see my beagle run a track across 50 yards of standing water(i also impressed that the rabbit ran that route) i know it did but still was impressed/shocked!! so treeing a coon in the water well ,,, treeing a coon in a tree in the water!! is simple!! or should be for a good dog!! many years ago i had a lucky nite and ended up having the only dog left in a cast, it was tough nite but the ol' storm dog was clickin, 2 of the guys had themselves a little pow wow and off we were to finish the nite(and i honestly believe finsh the old nt.ch. walker) so the blue nt.ch. on the other cast had it made(no offense here to the blueticks just what it was)not this time anyway!!!!?) well we got there and it was wet EVERYWHERE!!! it took him awhile but he did his job and when we were done the guide /judge said right to my face "well the other "guy"'s strategie didnt work , congrats!!!" "i said thanks rooster!!" i hope to get in that woods again , it was the most solid water area with big trees i have yet to hunt, probably like some of the gator swamps i hear about(OF COURSE WITHOUT THOSE BIG LIZARDS!!!!THANK GOODNESS!!!
