Cold weather and your dog

I have been hearing of a lot of dogs dying in this cold weather due to a lack of extra straw, water, and food. In this cold weather please remeber to put extra straw, water, and food for your dogs. Dogs depend on us for everything.

DOOR FLAPS AND GFCI PROTECTED HEAT LAMPS ARE RECOMMENDED AS WELL. THEY DO APPRICIATE IT

Door flaps help, but heat lamps are not needed. A dog's physiology is very different from people. Going from one extreme to another is hard on them.

Fresh straw, water, draft free shelter, and quality food is all they need to be healthy and safe.

Frances Gail and I had to bring one Mt Cur in the house, she would not have made it otherwise. But, all of our other hounds and Curs are doing fine.

I mix cracklins in with our feed and soak it warm water. They don't need much extra water that way. Some of our dogs are gaining weight in the cold weater.

Natalie, Frances Gail and I remember you as a very young lady showing your dogs at Charleston, Illinois.

my dogs are fed twice a day with boiling hot water in the feed, water two or three times a day and there boxes are checked for straw just to make sure they didnt drag it all out.

I have my kennels butted right up to a shed I built. All the dogs have an insulated box inside the shed they can get in anytime they like. I just use rubber roofing for thier door flaps. It will stay warm enough for them inside that thier water does'nt even freeze just from thier own body heat. Except for a couple of young ones I have that like to tear off thier door flaps. Also the way I have things set up theres no need for heat lamps (unless I have young pups). Therefore no chance of a fire from them.

Without the 150 watt heat lamp, the temp.dropped to 46 degrees in side the box. This is with an outside temp. of 14 degrees. With the heat lamp on after only 2 hours, the box was at 65 degrees My heat lamps are outside the box,it is actually a can light fixture mounted to the lid and a grill is over the bulb. Works out real nice.

I agree...

Really take care of your hounds as much as you can...

I don't have the resources at the moment to build a shed that my hound can use... but I've liked that idea for a long time now... It's a good one.

I know not everyone can provide an indoor type of shelter for their hounds, but if it gets absolutely unbearable outside - I can put mine in my basement in a room/ enclosure I built specifically for dogs. It's still cold, but the degree is significantly higher... maybe 15 degrees or so...

WattsFlatsRedbo What are the dimensions of the shed?

i use a small electric heater and piped heat into two plastic barrels that my dogs live in. they like it. i put a thermostat inside one of the barrels. works just fine. whenever i go outside and feel how cold it is, i feel better knowing that my dogs aren't out there cold and uncomfortable.

The overall size of the shed is 8ft by 12ft. I just made it big enough to house 4 dogs and still have a little extra room inside.
