Freezing water buckets

Do you northern guys have any tricks or tips on ways to keep water buckets from freezing? I know you can buy a heating element to put down in water, but I don't have power out at the kennel.

Pray for spring! Buy rubber buckets and a rubber hammer.
I do it about 3 times a day.

water

i carry a gallon of warm water and mix it with thedog food its like gravy then to her.. She cleans it all up in matter of minutes and i know shes had a good warm meal , ( sometimes more than me ) LOL I use just enough warm water to cover the dog food in the coffee can and then dump in her dish , and little extra in water bowl . WITH after a few times you'll know how much water they want. MY dog actually has put on some weight in last month and its been below zero 4 a week.

Get a heated bucket and be sure to plug into a GFCI receptacle.

I soak the food in hot water, wait about 10 min and feed them 2x a day. I will also pour warm water in their dishes 3x a day. I don't fill their water buckets to the top anymore, I got tired of big round ice cubes all around my kennel.

Make a wood box large enough to contain your water bucket, allowing space around the bucket to stuff plenty of hay or something else for insulation. Cover the box and bucket with a board leaving just large enough opening for the dog to get her nose in for a drink. Fill with lukewarm water, not hot water. Place the box and bucket out of the wind. You'll only need to water your dog twice a day with this method.

I put plenty of water in their food every day. Almost like a soup.
Then I bring their buckets in and thaw them out every other day.

Animals are a little different than us. They can get alot of their water from their food.

frozen buckets

Seein how you don't have power , get a cooler like you would put your lunch in fill with luke warm water , it will still freeze but will prolong the agony a little .

Posted by oklared on 01-06-2010 12:18 AM:

PUT A CAN 0F PET, CARNATION, OR MILNOT EVAPORATED MILK TO ABOUT 5GAL. WATER. IT WILL FOAM WHEN YOU PURE IT IN AND YOUR DOGS WILL LOVE IT, I ALSO FLOAT THERE FOOD IN IT. THIS MIXTURE WILL STILL FREEZE BUT IT TAKES MUCH LONGER, THIS GIVES DOG LONGER TO GET PLENTY SO THEY DONT DEHIDERATE. ALSO THERE WONT BE ENOUGH MLIK PRODUCT TO CAUSE LOOSE STOOLS.

Posted by Dwils on 01-06-2010 12:54 AM:

feed my dogs 2 x a day and water 3 times

i got a bag of goat milk replacer and mix 2 cups with a 5 gallon buckett of Hot water and give the dogs 2 cups feed each and fill their feed bowls the rest of the way up with the milk replacer. they love it and devour it.

when i get home from work i feed them the rest of their feed and just give them plain water and before i go to bed i water them again.

they seem to like it this way and every time i used to water them they would never drink it and it would freeze so i just add it to the water to make sure they are getting it and keeping hydrated
