hunting in the snow?

Is it true that its very very hard to hunt in the snow? Do the coons not run or just hard for the dogs to smell? Or is there no truth to this at all?

We hunt alot in the snow, the dogs can scent good in a wet snow. The coons around here will move ok in the winter, bad storms or real bad cold snaps will keep them in.

I enjoy hunting in the snow. The only time I dont care for it is when either there's more than 2 feet of powder, or there's more than 6" of powder with a thin crust on top. The crust is what cuts up dogs and your shins. The all powder is ok on snowshoes until you try to lead dogs, mine arent behaved enough I guess...they keep stepping on my snowshoes when I go to take a step, easy way to take a spill and I'm hit tempered so that's all it takes LOL.

I really like to hunt on a real hard base snow with 2 to 3" of fresh snow ontop...easy walking (easier than summer time, no skeeters and no leaves) and you can see tracks including what they're running. Sure it's cold but they make cloths for that. Great way to cut a young dog in....and the tracks tell you exactly what they're running (sometimes). I dont think it's any easier or harder than no snow conditions, just a lil different.

couple inches of snow isn't bad if its warm enough you sound like a younger hunter snow can show you if your hound likes fast game if they like it then watchout because they can sight chase easier on snow if you have a good dog go for it your going to look at a lot of dens though unless its breeding season it all depends what part of the country you live in in my neck of the woods if your talking about 2 foot of powder your going skiing over at the ski slope and coon aren't moving !! wait till it warms up so they can stay on top they don't like draging their bellies through the snow if they don't have to as far as scent goes its as good in snow as bare ground all depends on the dog . if you have any more questions give a shout i won't blow smoke your way . Rabbits run year round. I've run them completely under snow in snow tunnels. Coon don't move like rabbits.

Randy didn't say coons moved like rabbit, just posted a link to pictures of those little hounds running in deep snow.

I'd give about anything to have 2 inches of snow on the ground and 25-30 degree nights right about now.

12 inches of snow and ice and single degree temps makes for miserable hunting even if the coon were moving.

yeah hunting in the snow ended for me with the first snow this year 12 inches. right now we have about 15 inches and drifts over every fence line. and to top it off a high today was -6 and low tonight is going to be -20. I think I will just watch football

the temp..is all that matters if coon move or not they dont mind the snow but if it gets colder than 15 degrees here lay will lay in the den and starv befor they come out

coon do den up but not like a bear, coon do not hibernate like a bear, ya'll want to kill coon in the winter? find the den trees and the food source and turn your dogs loose at the den trees, that be a dead coon if it is feeding!

HIBERNATION

Our coon go thru a semi-hibernation every winter 10 days to two weeks prior to the rut, which here the rut will start late december early january. After the rut starts you can tree a boar in any conditions with the right dog power. Our rut will run late dec early january to sometimes mid to late febuary.

If you can stand it and your dog can do it during this period it doesnt matter what the weather is like. Them ol boars will be on the go.

Went two nights ago 8 degrees outside made four trees one was a den and killed three big boars.

too much snow

we have about 15 or 16 inches of snow on the ground, and its in the teens.. been trying dropped two nites and never hit a track think them rascals are holed up for now, and im getting cabin fever
