Ever have a dog do this????
Has anyone ever seen a dog make huge circles (about 35 to 45ft)away from the tree before they settle. I know he is checking himself, but I have never seen one do it like this. He will locate, give a few tree barks and then get away from the tree and start running circles with his nose to the ground. He starts making wide circles and gets closer and closer to the tree. Kind of like a cork screw. When he gets back to the base of the tree he will re-locate and tree good. He does not do it with other dogs. Only does it when alone. Not a major problem, just takes a little longer to settle.
i had one that did that. i think it was just because she was trying to make sure of herself, make sure that the coon was in the tree and didnt get away.

He is trying to be dead accurate for you.
Keep hunting him and he`ll get faster and quicker at it.
Sounds like he has some gray matter between his ears......
Yep, they are supposed to do this.
Don't let anybody kid you thought, if you have one that can run a track fast enough they still get more than their share of first trees AND check the tree.
And that's the way I likum.

You will get a lot of debates on if this is what a dog is supposed to do or not.
It will not get fed here, but to each their own.
Yep...Still own him and hunt him even though he is 13 years old.
He is the most accurate dog I have ever owned and when he was younger, he got more than his fair share of first trees.
Give me one like him over these slick treeing "quick tree'ers" any day of the week.

They get fed if they do it BEFORE they locate. After they locate, everything but the barking better be done.

I have seen him do this a couple of times. Was wondering what was taking him a while to settle on some trees. So, I was close enough to actually walk in on him a couple of times and saw it for myself. Also, had a friend hunt him for me for a while and he saw him do the same thing. After reading all of this you should be able to gather that he makes more than one circle. He actually makes big circles and then makes smaller ones as he gets closer to the tree. Probably won't be comp. hunting him any so it's no big deal. I have just never seen one check himself like that. Howver, when he settles you usually find a den or the coon.
He sounds good to me. If you're not comp hunting then you will get to enjoy those rare dogs that others send packing because they aren't "quick" enough. I think that's what the old hunters use to like about their dogs that they were different and all theirs. Not just a copy of what everybody else has. He's accurate but does it his own way, I like it. It makes him unique, fun, and you can recognize what he's doing and know that he's got a coon when you go in to him. What a feeling! I had one once...

Sounds good to me Matt...As long as its not taking him more than a couple of mins to check himself, I don't see a problem with it.Especialy if he has the meat.

If you can't put up with it in a nite hunt, then it must be a fault....right? And if it is a fault, then why should or would a pleasure hunter put up with it?
Since I began useing a Garmin over a year ago I have noticed that MOST dogs do this. You can watch them setting up a tree time after time on the Garmin. Some locate and then check, most don't. But I have noticed more check that don't check.
