Legend E-Trex by Garmin?

I Went hunting the other night in some woods I didn't know and used my Etrex to get back to the truck. I climbed up and down three small mountains or BIG hills and would have crossed 3 more in the last half mile had I not walked out to a highway and followed it back to the truck. With that being said can you get a topo map for the Garmin Etrex Legend? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Doug Lawyer

Cant you mark where the pickup is and get back to the truck with the legend? I just got one but havent looked at it yet.

Yes you can mark the truck and it will lead you back to it. The part I didn't like was that it told me I was less than a 1/2 mile from the truck. However that was as a crow flies. I had already climbed three huge hills and then I saw the road and walked out to it and walked back along the highway to my truck. In the last 1/2 mile I passed at least three other hills if I would have continued to follow the navigation arrow to it. It will get you there and is accurate with mileage but sometimes it is not the best route when you are a fat old man dragging or being drug by a dog up and down hills. I mark my truck when I walk away from it and I know it will get me back to it but I might get my exercise when hunting in the hills. lol Happy Hunting

ok thanks. I misunderstood and wish the snow would leave so I can go hunting again.

They are still very useful and I usually take them to the woods along with my compass just in case.

i've been lost many times. i've used my gps to get out and i've used a compass. i've also marked my trail in with the reflective ties you can get from walmart. the very best way to get out is to have your dog lead you out. i have an 11 year old feist that will lead me out of anywhere, from the nastest swamp to the thickest jungle. she has never failed to lead me to the nearest road, trail or to the truck. i've seen her go one way and see it was too thick and turn around and go a better way. once in a while she will get distracted by a game scent but not much. every time she does lead me out, i'm so amazed and thankful. whenever i see the truck or trail or road i just want to kiss her. but she acts like it was nothing. i dont' see how she does it. it's amazing. all i have to do is say, "let's go home, katie". she looks around for a moment and starts off. she keeps looking back to make sure i'm with her. it's nice when your dog will find a coon or other game. it's a whole something else when they will find the truck for you.

Sounds like you have a very special dog. You better hang on to that one because not many can or would do that.

Happy hunting!

But you an Astro to hunt with and get a map card for it. It will be money well spent. That Legend wont pick up under leaves when the foliage comesback on. If anyone s in the market and you cant afford one buy the Yellow Etrex the ones that says something like intensified signal or something like that in red on the face. It picks up twice as good as any of the others just not as many functions.

I want one of the Garmin Astros but can't afford one right now so I will have to settle for what I can afford. The fact that leaves may mess with it is why I take my compass too in case it can't lock on.

The little $89 garmin yellow Garmin one with the increased signal isn't as affected by leaves. Best bang for your buck.

Posted by Len Machen on 12-24-2009 07:27 PM:

just make sure it is WAAS enabled, it will use ground and sky signals.I know the new E rtex Vista is like the little yellow one is and no leaves won't affect it. The Vista you can stand still and think about things and it will still work, the little yellow one you must be moving. I had an old Vista and loved it in the winter but bought a yellow one then they made the Vista like the yellow. I really like all the features of the Vista but the next one I get will be GPSMAP 60 Cx it will even take you home or to a hunt if need it to.
