Worm Preventive
Would like to know what fellow hunters use for worms along with Ivomec? I've tried valbezen and didn't like it.Looking for and alternative.
If you want to go to the vet and pay more, it's hard to beat Drontal plus. It gets all intestinal parasites. You you want to do it yourself, it's hard to beat Fenbendazole. Fenbendazole is the active ingredient in Safeguard and Panacur. The most economical way to use Fenbendazole is through Safeguard liquid goat wormer. At the dosage 22.7mg per pound, I have spent several hours in the family feed store with my caculator comparing every type of Safeguard wormer there is, horse paste, cattle paste, liquid, granules for canine and the goat wormer is the most economical.
The correct dosage of the goat wormer is 1.1ml per 5 pounds of body weight for 3 days in a row. A $15, 125ml bottle will worm 4-50 pound dogs. That's less than $4 each. If you have many dogs, you can get the 1000ml bottle for about $100.
Fenbendazole will not get the type tape worm caused by fleas. I treat this on an as needed basis with Praziquantel.
I stopped by the store and picked up product we just got in. It's Durvet Triple Wormer. Has pyrantel pamoate (nemix) and Praziquantel for tape worms. Looks like it will get everything, but whip worms. Very inexpesive. 12 tablets for about $25. 1 tablet will treat a $50 pound dog. I will probably used this for tape worms since it is about 5 times less than most forms of Praziquantel.
