I always liked that phrase, another one of my favorites is this hound will make you a winner, always deep and lonely with a coon.
so you call and ask how many hunts have you won with this hound and the reply is usually oh he has never been in a hunt and I always hunt him by himself.
I can gaurantee you my dog will be by himself if he is hunted by himself, with a coon may be another story

When I hear someone describe a dog as a 1st strike and/or 1st tree dog, I assume they are desribing a dog that consistantly gets struck for 100 and/or treed for 125. I don't take it that they are guarenteeing any such thing or even saying everytime, just that you can count on your share of 1st and 1st.
I would describe Big D as a 1st and 1st kind of dog and he can back that up even though he didn't get every 1st strike at the World Hunt that he won.

Posted by SCRedboneran on 12-20-2009 09:01 PM:

i like huntin my 3rd or 4th strike and often first tree dog rather then for a dog to be all quick and lie

Posted by Okie Dawg on 12-20-2009 09:02 PM:

4 first strike, first tree, get in the dark, be by themselves dogs. You would be standing there with one dog struck a mile away in 4 differant directions. Better hope you get first strike, not going to have enough time to walk to all of them. LOL

One other thing, if a dog is described as a 1st and 1st kind of dog they better have a very stout winning record to back it up because you don't consistantly get 1st and 1st and lose unless you are doing some other things very wrong.

Posted by JONAH on 12-20-2009 10:07 PM:

1st and 1st.......

Does this count: My dog is the 1st one back to the kennel and the 1st one done eating his food !

Posted by Houndologist on 12-21-2009 12:33 AM:

1st and 1st

there can only be one first strike dog, either mine yours or their's. i consider my dog a 1st strike dog because in the majority of the cast he's in he will consistenly get the majority of 1st strike.s and normally if in a heavy coon populated wood's will be by himself with the meat. as far as winning, he has won his cast four out of the last five nitechampion hunts but has yet to get a win towards grand, the last hunt entered in Onstead Mi he won the cast with 925 plus no minus only to come in to another score of 1,300. what can i do, wait for the next hunt i can attend and try again, in the mean time i just continue to work him at being consistance in what he doe's my wins will come.

we did it at the Ashland Zone this past year. walked to 12 splits in 2 hours, none of which had more than 1 dog on a tree the whole hunt!

it was action packed and A LOT of WALKING, but sure was fun seeing some nice hounds do it right in thick coons!!!

The treeing might be legit.
The striking.......... well 50% if not more would be getting struck off BABBLING.
Just hope the judge has enough "CAHUNNAS" to minus the BABBLERS.

Be hard to tell a babbler if it winds up on a tree by itself.

Okie, you judge a babbler BEFORE it winds up on a tree. That a dog might wind up under a tree with a coon doesn't make it any harder to minus that dog for babbling. Many dogs are struck babbling and then get under a coon. Treeing a coon does not make that dog innocent of babbling.
Judging a babble requires a level of experience I call houndsmanship. That is the reason the call is so seldom made.

Good point Jim. It's probably also hard to make it stick, and some judges may think it's not worth the argument.

Its easy to have 1st strike every time when they start barking as soon as you unload them out of the box and never shut up

Well it is easy to call babbling if it is running around BUT if it is in a fairly straight line and winds up on a tree by itself it makes it a lot tougher. Here were you hunt creeks that is what you would get a lot.
I use to have a dog people thought babbled becouse he would open if he was in any kind of coon scent. On leash, in the box or anywere else. I had him open some times while standing waiting to cut loose or just comeing out of the box if he hit scent. They would say he was babbleing and I would gladly strike him in becouse I knew he wasn't. Were most dogs just start pulling when in scent Rebel would start screeming.

Yep I would agree and there isn't anyone that hates babbleing more than me. I am just saying it would be tough to call some times. Even if you know they are you have the rest of the cast to convence and if it is straight down the creek and never shuts up till it trees you got a hard sell. You kow the one that owns the dog is going to contest it. He kows it is a babbleing sob and brought it to try to cheat with AND there is a lot of them out there.

Grady, A judge has the authority to minus a dog for babbling, no matter what the rest of the cast says.
