If that is what you enjoy doing then have all the fun you can stand. There are dogs shown every weekend somewhere in this country and a lot of people seem to enjoy it.

That wasn't toward Plottkid - it was in dread of the "hunt people" taking the opportunity to bash show dogs once again and make inappropriate or even llegal suggestions with no valid reasons to back them up.

show dogs

for the life of me i will never understand what the big deal is here. it takes just as much if not more to present a show dog as it does a hunting dog. either way you do it, if you have fun and enjoy competition, then either one will get the job done.some people just don't have time to chase hounds around all nite but still enjoy time with a good hound and the people in this sport.

I ALSO SHOW MY DOGS AND HUNT THEM. I BELIEVE VYOU CAN HAVE BOTH. BUT IF A HOUND ISNT A SHOW QUALITY AND IS A COONDOG ILL JUST HUNT HIM. I WONT KEEP A HOUND TO JUST SHOW. COONHUNTING COMES FIRST.

Just don't breed'em, unless.

Just my opinion, people shouldn't be breeding dogs that can't strike, run, tree and stay treed, by them selves.

OK, first off I will say do what you like and it's nobody's business but yours what you do. Personally I like for mine to do both.

Now for anyone that thinks it takes "just as much if not more" to make a show dog you are WAY off base. It doesn't take much at all to make a show dog. Matter of fact it is an after thought, something that I do to kill time. It takes hours and hours of hunting. It takes more to win one cast than it does to make Grand Show. I know cause I did both. If a dog has good conformation and a little brains you can win a show after thirty minutes of working with the dog. You can't do that with a hunt.

Show Dogs and Hunt Dogs

I think that there should be more shows for Dual Champions, not just at the bigger hunts. This way you know the dogs have won in the hunts and shows.

Posted by jdgher on 08-31-2003 05:00 PM:

Dual Champion's, Yes !!!!!!

More Dual Champion shows, for sure.
I think that it should also be, that they have special classes at the shows for Nite Champions. This way Nite Champions don't have to compete against dogs that have been bred strictly for "show" for the past 3 generations or more, to recieve a champion title. Not to mention that a nite champion is usually showing some mileage, example: Scars, torn ears, patches of hair missing from past scars etc. That a show only dog isn't.
Put the nite champions in a seperate class than the show dogs. This would increase the entries of nite champions at the bench shows. Also increase the number of Dual Champions for sure.

i don't think they need to seperate the nite champions because if their nite champions they are probably being hunted and their muscel tone will show it and will look beter on the bench. my opinion

>i mean i show all the time<
As I started nite hunting, I developed a little bit of an "attitude" about show dogs. I began to think of them as being inferior to nite hunt dogs. Now I feel a little stupid for ever thinking something like that. I'm very much "pro" dog shows now. A dog show is a great way to get connected with the coonhound community.

I don't bother to show dogs now, mostly 'cause I'm lazy.
It takes a lot of work to get a dog to stand nicely and not let itself become distracted and... my dogs aren't too pretty.
I'm all for the people that take the time to train their dogs and then go out and compete.

i dont show any dogs. i do pay a little attention to what they look like.. more when breeding than i do when hunting.. but next time you go to event watch the kids bench show.... this is the best part of whole event.... how many nite hunters got their first trophy at a kids bench show.. ? i think showing is great. it lets everybody participate.. its income for the club. i cant see why there should be any argument at all about showing.. i wish nobody would show or breed an adult dog that couldnt tree a coon.. i dont see that as a huge problem anyway..if dogs were bred for several generations just for showing it could hurt the breed, i think theres a pretty slim chance of this happening. if youve been to any number of nite hunts you may have seen a dog that couldnt tree a coon. or maybe it just looked that way on that night. pete

showing dogs

I have shown many registeries and loved them all but each one also has its problems. Showing can be fun if you don't let the politics get to you. I know many professional handlers that have the owners of the dogs they show pay for there flight trips and hotels where they show. One man charges 100.00 just to go in the ring with your dog each time. If you can exibit a dog well show your best and have fun. There is big bucks in showing other peoples dogs. I was asked to show one of my coonhounds in Europe at the Euro 2000 but of coarse $$$$ was an issue. Learn as much as you can and hit some seminars to educate yourself on the finer points of showing a dog weather on the bench or stacked on the ground. win or lose...enjoy doing it. Kim
