Dogs fighting coons

I have always believed that letting your dogs fight the coon after you shoot it out has always been a good thing. It brings out a fire in your dog and gives them a hatred for a coon. I have had several young dogs that never really clicked until the first time they got bit and developed this hatred. I have also had some that once they got bit that was the end of them wanting to go hunting, so I know it can work both ways. Friday night we had a coon run across the road in front of us. We stopped and got my 8 month old prodigy out to let him run and tree it to boost his confidence in hunting alone. He did a great job pushed the coon about a 100 yards and treed him. I couldnt have been happier at that moment. Now before I go any futher let me tell you this pup hates a coon. He has been bit several times and by no means is afraid of one. It seems like the more he gets bit the better he gets. So I had no hesitation in shooting this coon out alive to him so he could fight it. Well after a little fight the coon was dead and Ace was bleeding. No big deal he had been cut before just like any other dog. So we loaded him up and went hunting. He acted fine all night long like nothing was bothering him. When we got home he was still bleeding a little. He had got cut on the inside of his mouth, 2 little puncture holes that hadnt gone through his cheek. Nothing to worry about since it was so small. WRONG the next morning I went to check on him and he could barely stand up. The wounds would not close up since they were on the inside of his mouth. Everytime he opened his mouth or tried to eat or drink they would start bleeding again. I rushed him to the vet and they immediately put him under and stitched up the holes. Luckily my vet is a good friend and didnt charge me for half of what it could have cost. Ace is on the mend and starting to act like the goofball he was before all of this. Needless to say my dogs fighting days are over. This was just one of the freak things that always seem to happen to me. LOL So please be carefull with your hounds you never know when something like this could happen. Happy Hunting Jeremy Wilson

agree

I will shoot a few out alive but i always worry about an eye getting torn out or something like that. Freak things happen to me all the time so i just put the cross hairs on the eye and squeeze the trigger.

I try to shoot mine out dead. I still get enough coming out alive and fighting with head shots. I don't want my dogs tore up. I carry a blood clotting agent in my truck at all times.

If you shoot the coon out alive , then shoot your dog and make it fair ...

.. wounding an animal to be mauled and talking about it or posting pics is the dumbest and most harmful thing a hunter can dog to the sport .

.. 99% of real Hunters are better sports than that ....

i try to shoot every one of them out dead for this reason and compasion for the coons that i love to chase.if you hunt anything long enough you will have all kinds of stuff happen.it will be fights with the most well placed shots from time to time.some of our peirs in all types of hunting hurt us more than our foes.i respect all that we hunt and do my best not to be waistful and i think it pays of.im sorry about the preaching but some poeple will stop and think about this and it may hit home.this is not pointed at anyone on this post but if you look around where you hunt, what ever state your in you can find people who can use some help in their thinking.

I will just say I have learned from my mistakes, I have tried to shoot out every coon dead for the last 7 or 8 years. I used to believe that fighting a coon was good for the dog. I am tired of administering first aid to my dogs. I have seen no negative side to shooting out coons dead. The coon usually has enough wiggle left in him to excite the dog. I believe that fighting is the most overused training tactic in our sport. There would never be a reason to fight an old dog.

i try to shootmine out pretty much dead they still get fur in thier mouth and dont get all tore up does them as much good as getting all tore up and a trip to the vet jmo

I am not the best shot, so we bring along someone who is way better than me. Usually the coon hits the ground dead, but not always. My hounds are pretty good kill dogs and seem to like the ground fight. However, I have noticed as the the dog ages they don't like the fight as much. Just a taste is good enough to keep them hunting hard.

A kill dog is one that can kill a grown boar coon one on one .. that hasn't been shot out .

I don't see how folks can't figure out that if you shoot a coon out of a tree and a couple dog finish it off ... it was the bullet and the fall that killed it .. not the dogs .

If they try that they better be a pretty good sized dog and /or have a big mouth with a lot of jaw power. I saw some guys put on some pic's of coon weighing 35 + lbs.

not exactly sure why your on a coon hunting site and get all worked up over people that do things different than you. i shoot mine out dead but if someone wants to watch a fight or train by fighting...so be it. the coon is dead no matter how it got that way.
and yes i have accidently winged a couple that came down with nothing more than a cut. and the dogs KILLED it. soooo if the coon was alive and the dogs KILLED it, that would insinuate a KILL dog. i also have a dog that will not bite a coon on the ground. she will stand back and bay it until i can get another shot on it. i would call that brains, some say its a weak dog.

to each their own....its not just your way

When the situation presents itself, and the coon cannot run or climb fast enough, my male has killed them on the gound. He doesn't quit, even when others leave him, until the coon is dead. I don't like those situations cause a 30lb boar coon puts up a pretty good fight.

Hell, who needs a kill dog. The dog done its job by getting it up a tree, surely you can do yours by killing it. A coondog is judged by the amount of coons it trees not how well they fight.

EXACTLY ! I try to kill them but if they are still alive so be it. You wont see me trying to give a coon First Aid that wasn't dead before it hit the ground and the dogs got ahold of it!

I still got 8 fingers and 2 thumbs!LOL Sometimes just getting them on the ground is a feat in its self !! For me anyway !LOL But seriously I just love to watch a dog do what it loves to do dead or alive !! That simple....

You can do what you want .. but this isn't a coonhunting site .. it's an open forum on the www. that everyone can read .. not just coonhunters ..

.. the ARA save pics and posts like these to use against us later .. and the voting public will vote us out the door .

I always try to make sure they come out dead, but it sure doesn't always happen. Just last night i grazed a giant boar that bailed out. Well the coon and my 70lb male went rolling head over heels for about 40 yards down the hill before he was able to get the coon by the throat. He got tore up pretty bad. Gashed ear, bit on his eyebrow thats swollen real bad today, and two big tears in his cheek. Definitely not what i wanted to happen. A 6 month old pup got bit real good in the process, but thankfully all it did was make her snap and REALLY hate that coon.

Like someone said, I could care less how good of a kill dog the dog is. I just want them to tree coons. I have some good kill dogs, but the stitches aren't worth letting them show off their skills. Also like someone mentioned, I would NEVER make something intentionally suffer. Clean kills guys. If a dog is in the woods enough a fight is inevitable anyway.

Your right and that is understandable but let me tell you a little story about my 30 to 35 years of hunting around where I live.

When I first started coon hunting I never had to drive more than 2 miles from town and had permission from the farmers in the area to hunt their woods. 10 or 20 nice woods with plenty of coon for everyone in this area. Farmers at that time would ask YOU to hunt their woods and kill as many coon as you could. You know the days of physical labor. 3 bottom plows, 8 or 10 row planters, pickers you pull behind the tractor, shovels and pitch forks to clean the barn with, ect.... you get my drift.....

But as most hunters in this area knows the older farmers died out or there sons took over the family farms or big corporations bought up their farms and took out the woods and fence rows. They plow almost up to the edge of the road now. No need for fences because livestock never leave the barn. You still with me....

Farms that were taken over by their sons and they act like the end of the rainbow was in their woods once and they havent found the pot of gold yet and they dont want you finding it first.

People are selling the timber out of their woods around here and are taking everything that will make a 2x4. Hence treetops everywhere, den trees gone.

We have to drive sometimes 20 miles just to hunt a couple of woods with permission. A few really nice 20 and 30 acre woods that we use to hunt a little closer have new houses right in the edge of them. Needless to say they dont usually want you hunting because of various reasons, there house dog barking.... dogs treeing right behind their house in the we hours of the morning, people on THEIR property with guns...ect..

Out of state deer hunters and a few in state, lease alot of the big timber now also and they post the woods about every 10 or 20 feet so that you are sure to see that they dont want you in there. So unless something changes in the near future there wont be any places to hunt legally anyway. Sad but true.

So yes that could be a problem facing the coon hunter in the furure but there are many other reason that in 10 - 15 - 20 years from now wont really matter because there wont any place to hunt for them to worry about. I realize this is still a big country and this dont pertain to everyone but we all cant live in the same places that have places to hunt.

Hold on I have to wipe my eyes......

So if once in a while one comes out alive...........we have plenty to worry about already where I'm from......... BUT I LOVE TO HUNT AND I DONT LIKE ANYTHING THAT WILL DO AWAY WITH THAT !!!

Seems like Justin is all for fairness. I guess from now on all deer hunters must fight deer with a knife. Oh and bear hunters have to either kill it with a knife or wait for there ONE dog to kill it... I mean fair is fair right? How can we be so unfair hunting with GUNS? LOL but seriously, I don't see how anyone can come and say that it is unfair for a dog to kill a wounded coon when we are using guns and making them die anyway, not to mention all of the shots that don't kill them, if anything we shouldn't shoot them out, I mean they went up the tree to get away so they won, so guns just aren't fair at all... Looks like were going to have to do some climbing. AND no I prefer shooting the coon out dead, but everybody misses, and some coons walk out if you miss.....

You can call me cruel or what ever you want, but in the famous words of jerry clower, THAT COON HAS THE OPTION OF WHOPPIN ALL THE DOGS AND WALKING OFF IF HE WANTS TO. And dont say im cruel because i probly have lots of dogs under the tree, because unless im at a nite hunt, i rarely roll out a coon to more than two loose dogs. I enjoy seeing a good coon fight. I dont wound them so my dogs can visoucly mall them, but a coon is a coon, and a lot of people would rather see them killed however you do it, then them putting damage to there personal garden, large crop fields in which they make there living, or digging in there trash.

i think everyone is missing the point...........the first post said he liked to shoot them out alive to watch the fight.

there is a HUGE DIFFERENCE between that and shooting one out once in a while that has a little life left in it because of a poorly placed shot that unintentionally didnt kill the coon dead before he hit the ground. we have all had that happen before, but shooting them out alive to watch the dogs fight them is about as poor sportsmanship as there is. you owe the animal that you love to chase the respect of a clean kill if harvesting.

like it or not...justin"s point is well taken.
