Cougar in Wisconsin

After all the years the WDNR has declared that Wisconsin does not have a Cougar population they are now going in a different direction. I have copied and pasted below an announcement that our DNR has made public. I could not copy the link to forward to all of you, and you will need to search hard on their web site - but it is there, along with a flyer for the seminars. Email me if you can't find the page and I will forward it to you. Here is the announcement:

Wildlife Management will host a Cougar training program by Dr. James Halfpenny titled the: Cougar Tracking, Ecology, and Behavior Workshop at the Crex Meadows Center, Grantsburg, WI on December 2 - 3, 2009. Dr. Halfpenny will be instructing a focused training relative to cougar management, but the workshop is available to members of the general public with a genuine interest in cougar ecology.

The workshop fee is $115. This includes registration, afternoon luncheon each day and workshop materials. Payment must be received in full before confirmation of registration is made.

This two-day workshop will begin at 9:00 a.m. on December 2 and end at 4:00 p.m. on December 3. A complete agenda will be sent after payment is received. Registration is limited to 40 people and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Recommended lodging is at the Lodge on Crooked Lake in Siren, twelve miles east, phone: (715) 349-2500, with a block of rooms reserved at the rate of $65.00 single or double occupancy. When making a reservation refer to the “DNR Cougar Workshop” for these reduced rates.

Registration must be received by November 30, 2009. Payment can be made by sending a check along with completed form to: WI Department of Natural Resources, ATTN: Shawn Rossler, P.O. BOX 7921, Madison, WI 53707-7921.

lions

wv wont admit to a cougar population either ,but they are here iasked DNR agent about them he told me if there are any they were released by exotic owners but that they were monitored very closely..what a bunch of crap!!!

Natural resource departments do not consider three animals a population. When a cougar passes through WI. on a walk about the DNR does not consider that a breeding population.

Technically speaking, WI. does not have a cougar population even though there are transient cougars here.

Would you pay someone to manage two cougars that may or may not stay in the state?

The cougars in WI. will be seen in an area for awhile and then they disappear. You can not even say that they stay in the state. Just because there was a cougar here last winter does not mean there is one in the state today. That is hardly a population. It is the same with moose. There are more moose in WI. than cougars and there is no such thing as WI. moose population, yet.

Kyle are we sure there are more moose in Wisconsin than cougars?

WELL THERE IN MN. TOO BECAUSE WE HAVE ONE ON A TRAIL CAMERA CARRING A DEAD DEER IN ITS MOUTH. MAYBE ITS UR COUGAR FROM WI. YOU CAN HAVE HIM BACK.

just last deer season a group of hunters saw over 8 mountain lions up on a ridge behind they're house. they took me back there and showed me the dens. they got mountain lions on camera. and there was a crop farmer the opposite direction of me that had 3 living in a den under his grain bin. so thats 11 mountain lions with in a 20 mile radius. so i know they're around!

For years Minnesota DNR has denied that we have mountain lions.
Last week we found a deer carcass and set up a trail cam- the very next day we got a picture of a mountain lion on it. We didn't even bother to tell the DNR.

Now, this year, after many, many sightings, the DNR is backtracking and admitting that we have what they call a "transient" population. I imagine that with the proliferation of trail cams it won't be long before the DNR has to admit that we have a population here.
