Lump?

Just got a new pup about 3 weeks ago. About a week ago, i noticed a little lump above his shoulder blade a little below the neck.... Now its the size of a golf ball and yesterday it felt like a build up of fluid but today its harder.... it doesn't seem to bother him or cause him any pain but its kind of gross lol. i'm not thinking its on the lines of a tumor but could it be a cyst? Curious what it could be? He hasn't really been around other dogs to where it was a puncture wound and he had his shots well before this lump appeared...

Any clue what it might be?? Thanks!!

can you squeeze it/does it pus at all? if so that's a sebaceous cyst... darn greasy hounds, it's basically a big zit if it doesn't go down in a few days, i'd have it checked out...

Alex

It could be from a shot that was given to him. I always give my shots around the shoulder blades and from time to time it causes a cyst that sometimes hardens.

I agree with Jeff ... It sounds like a Reaction or Infection to the Vaccine ..

If it doesn't start reducing you may have to try Antibotics ..

Good Luck

I had a gyp that would do the same thing. Her shoulders would get these small to large size lumps a day maybe two to three days after giving a shot.
The vet gave the first set of shots. I took her back in and he said it was due an alergic reaction to the shot. While they were still in the mushy stage, he drained bloody fluid out of them. He said they could possible go aways on their own, but if they did not they would harden.
I gave all of the remaining shots myself. Same thing happened. I took her back on one occasion, but he could only get a little to drain out. The last set of shots I gave under the skin in the hip. As far as I know she still has a hard lump back there.

All of the ones that were drained before they hardened went away. The others left hard places.

Craziest thing I have ever had to deal with. Just get near her with a needle and she would get those dang lumps!!

Thanks everyone for the replies! I'm thinking it probably is just a later reaction to the shots. It isn't getting any bigger and it seems that its kinda going down.. hopefully it will go away in time! Thanks

For dogs with allergies

Give benadryl at the same time as the shot, or half an hour beforehand. The dog dose of benadryl is 1/mg per lb of dog. You can use the human capsules which come in 25 and 50 mg. 25 is ok for a pup--an overdose will just make them a little sleepy and thirsty, no long term harm.

The benadryl will minimize the reaction.
