when is a good time to start a dog on the bench

i'm saving the new plott pup i'm geting for big stuff and youth events it won't get entered probally till plott days born plott days this year

start working with that dog right away, just a few minutes on the bench then a little walking then back in the pen. Pups need time to grow and sleep and play, but when you have it on the bench make it count. Get those feet proper and hold that head up.

As soon as they can walk! But....go slow. By the time they are about 4 weeks old if they are born here, or otherwise as soon as we get them if we get a pup from an outside source, I start putting them on the bench. First few times its just to get them up there and pet and brush and handle them, let them know the bench is a good place to be. Then you can start teaching the to stand still, then to hold their head in the proper position, then start squaring them up. Lessons should be very short (less than 5 minutes) for the youngest ones, and always end on a positive note.

you should probaly start as soon as they are weaned from momma put them on the bench not perfect just get them used to it and being handled on the bench as they get bigger make them understand not to move place their feet where they should be probaly play around with them from 5to15 minutes each time i do mine at least 2times equalin 10 to 30 minutes remember always have fun with your hound i dont show my hounds that much but it helps get their attention so when they do get bigger they are easier to handle i bench train every hound i own it is a lot of fun

I play with my pups on a bench when they are about 10 weeks old. I do this just for them to get use to being on something that high off the ground. Just start placing their feet in the right places once they get use to being up there. They will get use to it after a while. Take your time with a pup and don't push it to hard at a yound age. I usually don't even start entering mine in shows until they are over a year old. Stress on a young dog to early will lead to bad things later in life. Just remember start slow and work your way up. By the time they are 8 months old you ought to be able to work them twice a day for short periods of time.

Take your dog to some of the local shows before going to a big show. It will get him used to being in a different situation and around different dogs.
Other than that, everybody else is right on. Time and more time.

It's never too early to start getting a pup used to being handled. You'd be surprised how much a 4 week old pup will learn from SHORT PLEASANT lessons. The first 12 weeks of a pup's life are critical for training & socialization. Always end training sessions with something the dog does well that earns lots of perfect performance praise. Your pup's tail should be wagging during training - happy encouraging words help to bolster the pup's ego & desire to please. Getting a pup used to standing quietly on the bench is the first step - don't worry about all the little fussy details - they can be added gradually as the pup learns to stand still.

Start showing them as soon as they make GrNtCh and Gold Ch.unless you win one of the world hunts then you can start right away

some of u don't understand it won't be competition hunted at all and i will not put easy wins on it at local shows i try to keep it regesterd for the most big things im not a hunter i'm a shower

first of all, not all local shows are "easy" wins.
But I didn't intend for you to go to local shows just for the win. It's good experience for the dog and for you to get your feet wet at a few small shows first. You don't have to go to a lot of them.

And, a lot of us pleasure hunt. Don't let the ones who push competition bother you.
