I sit down and play with them. Usually the one that there seems to be a mutual like is the the one I pick.
I have noticed something over the years. If at any point you get disappointed with a pup or young dog, that dog knows. I also firmly believe that dog will never rise to its full potential as long as you feel that way about the dog.
I have seen young dogs in the hands of someone who didn't care for the dog, and once it changes hands wham that dog starts making advancements.
So push comes to shove pick one that you think you can live with for the next 12 years, but still remember as much as you may like a dog they all still don't turn out.

you pick one form two coondogs I pick one in the middle not to big not to small not bark all the time not never bark at all but it has to be from coondogs
I think its all just a gamble, and you never really no what is going to be the best one. I like to pick the ugliest, most active one. No particular reason, just what I like to pick. Usually you can see which one is the most dominant and they usually start faster.

EVERYTHING happens for a reason.
My dogs were the biggest beast looking out of their litters. Both made coondogs. So I bred them and kept the runt of the litter. She was a pretty little thing. Did it as an experiment because I once heard someone on here say they always picked the runt cause it had to fight to survive which made it a good dog. I don't know if that's true, but this pup has good genes and just wanted to find out for myself. She's only 3 months old and so far I'm only doing obedience training with her, but I'll let you know how the experiment is working out here in about a year or two.

For me picking is not an option. That option is exercised by others interested in the litter.I keep what is left or get sent the ugly one.
My approach is "if IT is in there I will get IT out".
Looks mean very little to me at that age(weaning).
But I have seen some litters that were all big beautifull pups, those are easy,I still get what is left over, matters' not to me.
Bout the only picking would be male/female.
So reach down there and pick me one.
I roll them over 3 times to the left, then 3 times to the right, if the pup jumps up and spins to the right, he passed the first of 2 test, second I lift his tail and look at his anus, it must be perfectly round, if it is , then its my pup. LOL Naa, just kidding, I just pick the prettiest one available.

You know that pup that walks around and cries about everthing. I think that is natural discontent when not content and I don't ever think anything or anyone looses that. They want what they want when they want it and are very determined to get what they want. Put that on a track or under a tree and see what you get. Not good if you are picking a pet though. I just take the first one to me when I walk into the pups pen for a pet/ home protection dog.

Let a kid pick one. Its pretty much a gamble when they are young but you are guarenteed to make the kids day.

I have no sure method to how I pick a pup out, sometimes I might pick a pup b/c of its looks(and when I say looks, it might not always be what people would consider the pretty one either) and other times b/c of its personalty. I have found if I pick it for myself its a dud and if its for someone else its gonna be a good one ..

I usually let the puppy pick me. If I'm the breeder I usually have a pup that I really like, but I let everyone else pick their puppies first. If my puppy is meant to be mine, then he's the one that's left at the end. It's worked for me. Some folks choose the runt, some the darkest, some choose the puppy with the biggest "tree knot" on his head, or biggest backside. Others pick them up and turn them over on their backs for a couple of minutes. Some have made really loud noises to see which one is the bravest. It all depends on the person I guess. Amy
