**QUESTION**English Dogs & Pink Noses

For Bench Show Purposes - are PINK noses acceptable on an English Dog? I have read the standard and it does not mention nose color at all nor is it listed as a disqualifying fault. Is it the judges preference or not allowed?

Thanks! Priscilla

PS - I'm not talking local level shows but on a state or national level and particularly in the DUALS class at the big shows and breed specific shows.

Here is what standard says............

HEAD

The head is broad between the ears, and of good overall length. Skull very slightly domed. Muzzle is long, deep and square, with enough flew to give the jaw a squared off appearance. Stop is well defined but moderate.

TEETH - Scissors bite preferred, even bite acceptable. Undershot or overshot are disqualifying faults.

EYES - Fairly large and set moderately well apart in skull. Dark brown in color with tight fitting lids.

NOSE - Large with well-opened nostrils.

EARS - Set fairly low on skull, fine in texture and soft to the touch. Fairly long, reaching nearly to the nose when pulled forward.

There is no mention of nose color like in other breeds.............so it is safe to assume a pink nose is acceptable?

I have seen in the past a select few dogs with pink noses do well at the larger shows. Some have black noses in the summer and pink in the winter, too. I have also heard of people dying or markering a nose to make it appear black. Not sure if that's good for the dog, but I know of some show people in AKC that have done it for other breeds.

a dog who has his nose colored should be disqualified or for that matter anything is done to hide or enhance a dogs natural appearance should be disqualified

I am not going to change the dog's nose color. I don't even own him. Just asking a question as to whether or not it is ok or not?

I agree. However, it still happens and a quick rub of the nose on a light colored dog should reveal this.

Pink noses

There are many almost WHITE English lately. And Some may also have blue eyes. This is a wakeup call for breeders to introduce some dogs with good color into breeding programs to retain more desirable pigmentation and eye color. Of course it's all a matter of personal preference, but in other breeds, when pink noses and blue eyes become prevalent, those breeds also begin to see random cases of deafness. I'm NOT saying this is happening to the ENGLISH breed - just mentioning what I've seen since I started training, handling & breeding dogs in 1949.

And folks wonder why I dislike Hardtime Speck bred English. And, there is a couple of other English lines where you can get pick noses.

Pink noses doesn't stop them from treeing coon, I have had an excellent pink nosed Englsh for the last 9 years. And, she is a Bench Champion. But, I don't raise many pups out of her and none of my other English have pink noses or will throw pink nosed pups.
