Pancreatic Insufficiency
My dog was losing weight over the last couple of months, took her to the vet and she turned out to have Pancreatic insufficiency. It is where the pancreas doesn't create enough enzymes to break down food in the stomach and the food passes through without leaving the dog with much nutrition.
Just wondering if anyone else has delt with this and what they did, put the dog down or treat her for the rest of her life, It's a tough decision.
Thanks
How did the vet diagnose this?? I have one who has lost some weight here recently. I have wormed him and feed him quality dog food he just wont gain any weight back at all.

i just had a schnauzer have to have all her female's removed because they were infected. The infection backed up into her stomach so they flushed her stomach, which in turn caused the same thing that is going on with you to happen. For her right now we are hoping that it starts working again. What my vet told me was to give her pancake syrup. why? i don't know but hope it works!

Mine had something similar, ended up with "Pancreaitus" an infection of the Pancreas which filled her with infection...treated that for a week before the vet gave up and put her down...It was very hard on us as she was my best dog; both in the woods and at home.

Injectable Vitiman B12
Many years ago we could get injectable B12 and that would put weight on a dog in a hurry. I dont know or at least I cant remember but I do remember giving it to dogs that had been treated for worms and was in poor health before the worming. I was trying to think but I think they changed to a liquid that you put on their feed but as I recall it didnt work as good. Dont know if it would help this problem or not. Does anyone else remember using B12? and what they used it for? Getting old sucks !!
The vet did a test and sent it off to a lab, and that is what it came back with.
From what I've read on the internet it is hereditary and it can also be caused by a case of pancreatitis. It usually shows up on dogs at about 2 years of age, mine is 1-1/2 and she is turning out to be real good dog, and she's a real sweetheart too. They make a powder you can mix on their food and wait 20 minutes before you feed it to them. But it's kind of costly.
B~12
I know what they give it to women for...........
It's a God send for us..........and probably those AROUND us.
I have heard of Red Cell, I think it's called. It has to be something like B~12 in a liquid form.
Best of luck to you and your hound. I hope she is running and treeing for you again before Thanksgiving!

The easiest (and cheapest) solution is to go to your local butcher and buy fresh pork or beef pancreas (the pork is actually slightly more effective, but harder to find). Depending on your state laws, you may have to leave a signed letter with the butcher stating what you are using it for, and that it's not for human consumption. Cut it all up and freeze it in two or three day serving sizes.
Just add small amounts of it to her food daily - this is essentially what the pancreatic enzymes that you can buy are made from, but I always prefer a fresh and natural source.
You can get good info on the amount to feed from a few simple google searches. Dogs with pancreatic insufficiency can live normal and productive lives. It is also worth weaning her off of the supplements once a year, as about half the time, the pancreas will kick back in and start working again on it's own....
Laurie
Thanks so much for the info, I'll try to get the fresh pancreas, if I can find it. I'll also try to contact DKrause to see what he is using.
Thanks everybody
Pancreas problems.
Ed Able gave me a dog that was diagnosed with this,Vet said about 100.00 a month medicine the rest of his life. Ed had the money but the dog wasn't any account, never seen a dog this skinny in my life, tons of good medicine and great feed still poor hide just stretched over skeleton.Ate enough food to feed an army of elephants. I took him from Ed's to a buddy of mine who said he could fatten him up I said don't think you can but knock yourself out he's all yours. Let me know how that works out for you. Don't have one clue what or how he did it but in three weeks time the dog was healthy and as big as a train.I pry-ed and pry-ed to get him to tell me how he healed this hound up and he said it was an old family secret.Dog is alive and slick and fat and doing better in the woods but still far from anything to be proud of.
cant digest hard foods,no raw hide bones, milk bones
can have canned food with what ever medicine the vet
gives you
caned dog food 12 percent protein 8 percent fat and 80 percent moisture (water) how can a dog live on that?
