Moonlight Myth??? Or no Myth???

For those of you that claim the moon has nothing to do with a coon moving here you go.

Went to a hunt this past friday night. 4 dog nite ch cast and it was clear and almost a full moon. My cast made 3 slick trees and my dog treed the only coon we seen. My buddy was in a regiested cast and 2 of the 3 minused out due to slick trees.

Went Sunday night clear and almost a full moon. 1 slick tree and 2 den trees that had no track to.

Went Monday night and made 1 den 1 slick tree and 1 coon, no track to any of them.

Tuesday night went to a pkc hunt and it was clear and a full moon. 2 den trees 2 slick trees and 1 coon.

Went last night moon was covered and wasn't up til about 1 hr 30 mins after dark. First cut we cut my english male and my friends bluetic male. My dog struck ran a short track located and bam den tree in 5 minutes with a coon. Friend ran the blue dog down and caught him.

Next cut my little walker female and his blue dog. My female struck in under a minute and right after she struck his blue dog struck then my female located and bam treed in 3 minutes. His dog treed with her and she had a small coon.

Next we cut my english male dog again and his bluetic again. My male struck right off the leash and about 45 seconds after he struck his bluetic struck and my male located and bam treed in 4 minutes and then his dog got treed with him about a minute after had a big old coon.

Next we cut my little walker female by herself. She struck in 30 seconds in the corn and pushed that coon right out of the huge corn field ant treed him up a sapling in under 10 minutes. Started at 7 30 and back home by 10.

But the past few times I had been out when it was clear and moonlight I couldn't even run a track and I went with several different dogs. The coon that were treed were just old lay ups. coon.

My grandpa hunted for 45 years and he always told me to stay home on a moonlight night. Maybe for you all that went this past full moon are happy to tree 1 or 2 coon a night but I expect to tree a coon everytime a turn my dog and when I can't even get a track to run it's not the dogs fault. Who wants to walk to den trees all night? Or even slick trees? I sure don't, that does nothing for you or the dog but gives them every reason to run a deere, opossum, and many dogs will tree squirrels in a full moon.

I can blow last nights hunt out of the water...

Turned loose at 9 pm lots of cloud cover never had a bark... Hunted for about an hour and half.

Tuesday night hunted under BRITE FULL MOON. dogs treed one I saw three sitting up.

From my two hunts it would look like a full moon is alot better to hunt under.

If you expect to tree several coon everytime you go you need to come to Va and hunt in THIN coon for a while.Then you'll really LOVE hunting in Ohio....

I find this hard to believe but I have never hunted in Virginia. I can guarantee this; You go in full moon here in Ohio 9 times out of 10 it ain't worth a plug nickel.

Yes I have alot of coon but every woods that i hunt gets the hair hunted off of it. Ran into 3 stinkin people hunting last night.

Like I said your more than welcome to come for a hunt.

I couldn't beleive that I never had a strike either. We hunted the same woods on Monday night and everytime we turned them loose we had a strike within 5o yards.

Amen, Justin. I had an 85 year old coonhunter tell me that the success of a hunt depended on the amount of dogs you took hunting.......and the amount of dogs you take home. A bad nite hunting is better than a good day working!!!

This could be true for some but think of all the bad habbits you may cause you're dog to start by turning them loose when there's not coon to be ran. A coon dog knows when it is cut loose it is supposed to be chasing something and when it runs deeper and deeper with no coon ttrail many dogs will run something they shouldn't.

I will agree here in ohio everytime you cut you're dog loose there is a coon to be treed, the question is how far do they have to go 1 mile 2 miles? I would rather have a dog that hunts a section out then returns to me if nothing is found. It's to dangerous with heavy traffic to expect a dog to run over a mile or 2 to tree a coon.

If the coon had not been moving you should have made 0 trees. Coon had to have been moving at some time for you to have made all those slick trees. Coon move at various times of the day, not always at sundown. You have to adapt your hunting schedule to fit their schedule.

I hunt 6 to seven nights a week and go to normally two hunts a week. Most the hunting I do is by myself, I gained the knowledge of coon hunting from myself, I had nobody to show me what a dog was supposed to do at first but now I expect my dogs to tree a coon everytime I turn them loose.

Old track bark hear and there, hot track bark every 10 or 15 seconds. With leaves now off I expect to see a coon 80% of the time and if my dogs do not produce this # I will whip them until they do or get rid of them, I also like a very good noticable locate with good volume. I also expect my dogs to be by themselves 110% of the time. Covering another dog is not exceptable in my eyes no matter the track. In a night hunt i will not tree my dog if it comes into you're dogs tree after 1 minute, if my dog is that slow then he doesn't deserve any points on YOU'RE dogs tree.

Full moon doesn't make any difference.

But if the East wind is blowing or the smoke from the chimney's is falling instead of rising, then you might as well stay home...

It takes the better dogs, veteran dogs I guess, to tree coons in conditions like last weekend. The hunt I attended Saturday nite was a Walker Sectional and drew 25 dogs. 10,13, and 2. The 3 reg casts all came back dead, the NtCh and Grand cast all came back with a plus points winner. One winner had a thousand and something.

When did hunting become a night after night tree show. you better tree me a coon tonight or i'm going to spank your butt. if i was a dog i wouldn't hunt for you at all.

take coon hunting as a pleasure sport to have fun, not to beat your dog because he's not having a good night. The best dogs in this country don't tree coons evernight they have good nights and bad nights, just make the best of what you get.

Myth or not?? I have no idea.

Last night was full moon...made 5 trees......1 slick...1 den...3 w/coon...I'm most certain a coon was in the den.

In general, on nights with no moon has produced better night hunting all around.

Treed 3 last night. Left the truck at 7:00 and was back in it at 8:45. Treed one each of the last 9 nights with very bright moon and no cloud cover. It hasn't hurt the hunting at all here. They're not going to stay holed up when it's their best opportunity to fatten up for winter.

I agree with just about everything you just said in what you looking for in a hound other than the being by theirself 110% of the time. In this sport our dogs are bred to be pack dogs. The line of dogs that i hunt now will split tree if given the chance but their not jealous so much that they won't work with other dogs.

i know a lot of it has to do with your hunting spots.
when i was growing up we had a spot we called
dark hollow.my dog has done ok for under 2.
it amazes me how many have came on with a
bunch of slick trees and have not run the big
1 yet is it just the sign of time.

Maybe in thin coon but there's no reason for a dog to cover another dog in thick coon. That's my oppinion. You're better off knowing you're dog is ALWAYS going to be by itself then wondering well is he going to cover this time?

You don't have to worry about whether or not they will cover if they are in the front.

I'm telling you right now, if you have dog going a mile or more to tree a coon in ohio this time of year SHOOT that sucker because he passed up 3 coons to get that one.
Only time of the year when they should even get remotely close to that is the end of january, when its 10 below and the only coons out of the dens are the big ole males.
