Full Moon ?

How many have luck hunting under full moons ? Just wondering ....Last night quick drop and 3 coon under
a Full Moon. Usually I don't like to hunt when its full
moon as I don't think things are moving but Last
night was a exception.

around my area its real spotty on a bright night..need to get in thick timber or dark pockets in the hills for better luck..i have to much open ground and the other night the dog went thru a 1 mile section without a single bark..i picked her up on the other side of the section and went home..

Just got in from hunting tonight, treed one about 6:30. Dropped out a second time and didn't get a bark. It's been my experience that most of the time on full moon nights the coon will move until the moon starts getting high in the sky.

I think it depends on the weather conditions. I don't like a full moon on clear and cold nights where you can hear house dogs barking a mile away.

There are some night the best dogs can not tree a coon.

Usually never have a problem with a Full Moon. It's an excuse for most people that don't have the dog power.
That said last night our dogs looked like crap.... Tonight with just as bright a moon we had a good hunt.

Ya but what do you blame it on when you go when theres no full moon and do the same thing?

I've gone out on whats suppose to be a perfect night and had worse nights than we did last night.

Full moon

Last couple nights, full moon and very bright. We got em treed, but every one was a big coon and along walk. We try to hunt the heavy woods & swamps when its bright. I think your right, its like any animal, they watch for predators.

Hunted Monday night with that bright moon. Didn't have to much of a problem I think it just depends on the luck your having. We made two quick trees and mama had the meat in both of them. She tires out after about two dumps right know gotta get the ol' girl back in shape. Since your hunting walker dog style now you'll have those coon on harder nights. lol.

Man sounds like I just need a better dog. Because I never have done good in a full moon and have never been with a dog that has. I would love to go with some of you that has a dog that can tree them good in a full moon please pm me. I live in Ohio and honestly I don't believe this nonsense. I have hunted too long and been with far to many good dogs to believe that all these dogs are treeing coon in a full moon. Can a coon be treed in a full moon? Yes but it's often very difficult and most coon lay up all night and gaze at the moon. They run very little most around 1 hour before it's dark and then they just lay up in there dens or big oak trees. The one's that you do tree usually have no track to them and it often takes a while.

Posted by HOBO on 11-04-2009 01:27 PM:

I've never had problems treeing coon in a full moon here in Va. Hooiser always says that his coon never move good in a full moon.

Your more than welcome to come to va for a hunt.

On average the full moon phase makes for longer rougher nites in the woods with hounds. Most full moon fall nights are exempt because the coon are out feeding to provide fat in their bodies for the winter months. The summer months with foilage dont create many problems, but does change coon patterns. The dead of winter hunting under a full moon is what creates all the mythes of lack of dog power <> including ME. Depends on how seasoned the dog is befor I pack it to the woods night after night on full moons. I guess if I were blessed with more coon things might be different.

Lee in the dead of winter is it the full moon causing the problem or is it those are the nights that it gets REALLY cold and everything is frozen solid?

Its tougher on me year round Hobo because of my low population. But to answer your question my opinion is its a combination. Frozen cold nights mean hybernation(half) or little movement living off the fall fat reserve. I know I have read several posts this morning about getting coon treed this go round on the full moon. Everyones not looking at the full picture. What I am saying is, on average including every month of the year the full moon hinders coon movement. Ive noticed this hunting northern IN behind many hounds, walkers included(not just my sorry mutts).
Im not disagreeing though that you tree coon under a full moon. I do know that some hounds can produce coon no matter what too, even here. Im just speculating on average.
