Flower Bulb's

Ok dug up some gladiolus Bulbs (spelling) ----I want to know, do I wash them, or leave the dirt on them In order to dry them? sure don't want them to spoil.

my dad used to raise those years ago when I was a kid.all I remember him doing once he dug them up for the winter was get some old women's stockings put them in those and hung them up in the basement till spring.
