time on tree for a cur
Greetings,
My young ladner bmc and I getting along well and seeing coons. I dont know any cur hunters around here and usually when I go out its with a buddy that runs hounds. The topic of staying treed has come up and I am curious what other cur hunters expect. The hound guys I know would expect their dog range way out there and to stay on a treed coon for hours if need be. My dog hunts close and checks back often.
This is her first season and currently she trees hard but when I get there she wants to back trail for a minute or two. She either gets back quickly on the tree herself or if i tell her to "get that coon" she is right back to treeing hard. I have started tying her to the tree when I get there. What should I be expecting out of her? Is it fair to expect her to tree like a hound when she has a totally different hunting style otherwise?
Thanks,
josh
ps we will be out again tonight so any quick advice is appreciated.
You are doing the right thing by tying her up.PUT THE FUR in her mouth!Sounds like she is coming along nicely. It also sounds like she is lacking a little confidence, but you are doing what needs to be done.Time and experience will raise her confidence level to the point where she will come in on the tree solidly and stay hooked for you. They do not make tree dogs over night.Keep her in the timber and she will do fine.It is fair to expect her to tree like a "tree dog".I have seen hounds, and other breeds that do not stay treed very long.A tree dog is a tree dog, regardlesss of shape.size or color.
amen on that one
