help how do i get my hound interested in coons?

how do i get my hound REALLY interested in coons?

Duke is a Black & tan throwback out of redbones, is is coming up on 2 yrs old. i had him out nearly every saturday night during season since he was 7 weeks old. didn't mess with him much with a hide during the first year messed with him a little more this summer, every couple of weeks i would pull a hide out of the freezer and try to mess with him (no great interest on his part). had a live coon a few times caged he just kinda barks at it then moves on. if i draged the cage he would follow barking. (that was begining of summer.

Had him out last night, had a caged coon he sniffed it and that was all. hunted for 3 hrs. he hunted good stayed out. did not open up at all on anything the other two hounds were doing. other hounds are not mine this is thier 3rd or 4th year out they do ok not champs but work able and will show ya something from time to time.

How old is the hide? It doesn't keed to be fresh but a rug might not work. Try teasing the dog with the hide, make a game of it. I put a hide on a 5 foot cord tied to the end of a 6 foot stick. I tease a pup and get them to play with itbefore making drags.

Use SunSpot Lights, so bright its like the sun came out at night !!!

The hide should be fine as long as it stays fresh and doesn't get rancid.

took him with u when u hunt . he will do better that way. i guess i do it the slow way i guess but it workes.

coonhounds sometimes take awhile to get interested. For most, it turns on like a switch when they are somewhere between six months and two years old. The hunting instinct kicks in sooner for some, later for others. Early starting does not necessarily mean better hunter in the long run. If the pup is not showing interest, put the hide back in the freezer for another month. Work on obedience, coming when calling, and just take the pup to the woods and let it explore. Let it sniff a lived cage coon every couple of weeks, and wait until it shows interest. Some very good hounds are never much interested in hides or dead coons. Most are, but some good hunters are not. Same goes for bottled scent.

HOW OLD IS YOUR HOUND?

he's coming up on two in nov. we had him out last year, towards the middle of the season he would go out and hunt (nose down) and last couple hunts he opened up on a trail once but nothing major. our season starts in two weeks. I just want him to come around so bad it almost hurts. had him out last night for a couple hours. not much action on his part.

caged coon

Turn a caged coon loose on top of him!

It worked for me.

I had a young dog once that was just ready to flip the switch and an old timer down the road helped me out.

We took a caged coon and shook it into a burlap sack. Tied a long peice of rope to it and placed it out in the middle of the yard. We went and got the dog and he had a nervous brake down trying to figure out what was growling and biting at him in the sack. Good thing about this is he could put a smell with what was trying to get him.

Well we let him work the bag over for awhile, and then pulled it up the tree. He bark treed on the bag for about 10 minutes, as we lower and raised it to him. Next we whacked the coon with a stick, and stunned the coon (don't kill it) and let it fell out of the sack. The young dog grabbed a hold of it as soon as we dumped it out, and the good thing is the coon still had some fight in him. The dog finished the coon off.

We then put the dog back in the kennel and used the same coon to run some drags through the yard, out into the woods, and up a tree. We got the dog back out of the kennel and he ran right around the house to last spot he fought the coon, and found the drag trail and trailed it right to the tree and treed on it. We let him have again and put him away for the night.

From that day forward, he hunted harder and started to open up on hot tracks by himself.

Hope this helps, I still use this method today if I have a young dog just about ready to flip the switch.

That sounds like it might actually work. I'll have to ry it out this week end.

Was the sack real burlap or one of those burlap wanna bes, you know the plastic like ones.

any other ideas i can give a shot season opens nov. 1 in ky. like to have a good working hound by jan. Kinda wanna show my cousin and his dogs up this year. (they run off luck not any real skill or talent) he keeps talkin them up and talkin my dog down gettin old fast.

update

Duke opened up a little on a trail.

He barked, then whined little, whined then barked, silence, whined then barked. thats it

very excited he is finally making some noise in the woods.

he did it again

Went out last night and Duke opened on trail again he's doin good and i'm so happy he's finally makin some noise out there

Now i can't wait for him to start treein.
