"With the Leaves Off"

I hear this quote come up when talking about when bigger hunts should be held. For discussion purposes can some explain to me why this is such a big factor?

Posted by on 10-07-2009 05:18 PM:

It isn't except to the 50,000 who have never and will never be there. The AKC World hunt and the ACHA World hunts are held when the trees are bare and the same breed still wins.

Posted by BIG$BLUES on 10-07-2009 05:19 PM:

Because you can see a coon better i would say not trying to be smart but that is it look if one is packing a coon dog that is deadly accurate if you can find his coon when he trees it it makes it a little easier to win lots of times a person does not get any help shining a tree when the leaves are gone you really dont need any help

no leaves

Makes an honest dog look good and Like all mine a slick treeing idiot look bad. lol There are alot more plus and minus trees and less circle trees.

My MY Jim you sound a little defensive. The leaves being off aint good for those idiots that tree trees instead of coon regardless of breed. Funny how so many of those gamblin first tree dogs dissapear from the hunts when the leaves come off.

Posted by GA DAWG on 10-07-2009 10:11 PM:

Well, IF so many folks are packing a COON DOG...Why aint they beating these circle "slick" treeing dogs?????? The leaves have nothing to do with it..If they are there..More times than not your gonna find it..

Well i think ? was asked why do it when the leaves were off not to bash breeds. Like the one post said there is no ? if there's a coon or not. It's plus or minus unless hole, den tree or brush pile. Plain and simple. So why not keep answer to the ? being asked and leave the breed stuff out of it. I could carel ess what wins it but it will be a dog that is accurate and trees coons thats for sure when the leaves are off.

That's exactly what I was getting at. I get a kick out of this statement "when the leaves are off my dogs look better" Why?
If the wooded monsters are making circle trees.................Good mine should be by itself then.

Also, wasnt meant to be a breed issue.

Posted by john Duemmer on 10-07-2009 10:45 PM:

G A dog the leaves have alot to do with it. when you spend 60 or 70 minutes of a two hour hunt shining trees that everybudy in the cast knows are slick but they get circled because (he could be there) and you couldnt hear a COONDOG treed a couple hundred yards in over all the noise. With the leaves off these idiots would minus out in the first hour.

Posted by GA DAWG on 10-07-2009 11:09 PM:

If I could not hear mine treed within a couple hundred yards..I'd get rid of it anyhow..Plus lets just say the idiots are getting circle..So what if it takes 30 min shine time before you get to the coon dog.... ol coon dog should still be sitting pretty when you score its tree!! I just dont see circle trees keeping a good hound from winning the UKC world hunt..MAYBE some of the big hunts it could..They are luck of the draw anyhow..Most folks dont stand a snowballs chance in hades at winning one unless they are HOOKED up with a guide..Coon dog or no coon dog..Leaves or no leaves

You hit the nail on the head.

A decent dog has a chance to win with the leaves on. But when the leaves come off you better have a coon dog, because on Saturday night the other three dogs will be.

IMO all the world hunts should be held with the leaves off. I know I would stand a much better chance with the hounds I hunt.

Why?

Posted by on 10-08-2009 04:42 PM:

I expect a dog to take the track on and tree the coon while the slick treeing dog is getting circled. That means you score + they get circles. Leaves really shouldn't be a factor the trick is that your dog has to go on and tree the coon. Although it is nice to not have to waste time shining trees.

Posted by Okie Dawg on 10-08-2009 05:29 PM:

You have to be able to find the coon to know weather your dog treed one or not. If God just looked down and told you weather your dog is right or wrong would be a great help in training a dog and the right dog wining at any comp. Haveing the leaves off is the next best thing to Gods help. No matter what breed you have on your leash. I am not color blind. I will leed and feed any good dog.

Cause I like to pack a very accurate dog. This way I would be more likely to find coons in my dog's tree. And this way you could minus the slick treeing dogs, instead of circling everything.

PRIME TIME EXAMPLE:

ZONES IN ASHLAND THIS YEAR... MY CAST FRIDAY NIGHT WALKED TO 12 TREES AND WE SCORED ON 3 RACCOONS!

I'm not saying we didn't see coon because of lack of dog power (there was plenty of that), but because we were trying to score 200ft tall Oak trees most of the night in SEPTEMBER! LOL

Its the same old song.
Im sure my dog had a coon but it was too leafy to find it. Im sure those other dogs were slick but they got it circled because of the leaves.

Folks will always find an excuse why they cant win.
Like JiM said, their are a few major hunts held in the winter and the same dogs win them that win in the summertime too.
The guys winning these big hunts know what a world class hound is and wont settle for one that dont tree coon.

Get a better dog or a new excuse, thissn is wore out,

I don't think a lot of the guys are making excuses. I would just prefer for there to be no doubt... either they have the coon or not, my dog or yours. You know as well as I do, with the leaves on, many slick trees and trees with coon in them are circled. No excuses here, I know I don't have a hound capable of winning the world hunt.

I'm not running down any dogs or breed or anything but i do hide hunt with several buddys that have several big hunt top 5 and and more and consider them good friends and will not run down their hounds. But i've also went with their stud dogs that their advertising hide hunting and look up 15 trees and see 3 coon out 15. Not to start piss feist but tells me their doing the same thing in comp hunts. I'm not going to say who they are or what they are. And their good natured about it i give them crap and they give me crap. Like someone said it might be their or them dogs were slick. Making excuses y they didn't win. It's not excuse for me i'd just like to see it once. Cut and dry it's there or not.

the "without leaves" thing is for people that want an excuse. If i have a dog thats good about having a coon i should be able to fing my own coon in ten minutes of shine time , if the other dogs tree slick and get circled i will still be ahead JMO

Would you agree that when its tougher out and no leaves the coondog sometimes gets the short end of the stick because there tring to produce coons that aint there.

Posted by jason2579 on 10-09-2009 04:30 AM:

I'll say this leaves no leaves up here during our hide season 6 or 7 inches of snow 15 20 degrees out a dog will miss now and then anybody that says they got a dog that produces a coon on every track every dump is full of it their going to miss something is going to get blocked or stop them in one way or other at sometime or another. Its just the way it is. I've been hunting for over thirty years and hunting behind some of the finest dogs around ( not saying my ) i've hunting walkers for several years but i've hunted anything that was a coondog i'm not breed blind. Just as a guy brings one from up south puts him in snow and he may miss same as if i go down south in the swamps my may miss i'm sure he would. Most every dog is going to try to produce a coon but rather he does or not thats up to the dog and the conditions. I guess i look at it different back when i was a kid my father used the hide money for christmas and extra income if he took out his dog that look ok during the comp season cuz alot trees were circle cuz of the benefit of doubt it could be up there and come hide season no leaves and the dog is treeing 10 times a night and only producing 2 or 3 coon out 10 trees. GONE ! If he got 7or 8 out 10 he stayed. I guess it wouldn't settle good with me if i know i got a slick treeing SOB and i'm winning hunts with the piece of crap cuz 90% trees are getting circle when someone has a honest good dog is getting hosed. I've been to several big hunts so i guess i'm not part 50000 that won't make it. I don't remember reading anywhere in this post about people knocking the dogs that have won the big dances everyone of the dogs that have won it deserve it the world hunt isn't won in one night it's won over 3 nights and they proved they were consist enough to do it over those three nights. All i'm saying is just once i'd like to see the world hunt with the leaves off the other big hunts they can have them anytime they want.
