Female Heat Question?

Got a question for all, I have a female that cycles every 6 mos, bred her on her last heat in Feb and she whelped April 1st of this year. When can I expect her to come back in?

I thought her cycle would be knocked back two months or the length of fhe time she carried her pups. My friend believes 6 mos. What has everyone experienced?

She should have come back in in August. 6 months from heat to heat. Whatever she does this go round is what you will need to watch. It varies from female to female.

Bred in Feb
whelped in April

Still not in heat yet.

Having pups sets them back I am sure.

My other female when I bred her came back in heat 6 mos from the time she had pups not from the time she came in heat the first time.

Some females that I have had change their heat cycle the 2 months they have the pup in their belly.Some of them keep a 6 month cycle regardless. I would look for her to be in this month. Feb.-Aug. not in heat Feb- April pups April-Oct. in heat

I always restart the 6 months after weening the previous pups. This may vary from female to female?

Doug,

Ive seen them go 6 months from the time the pups were born, 6 months from the time the pups were weaned, and I have seen them come in heat 6 months from the first heat regardless if they were bred or not.

Just depends on the female, and there are variances in even that.

The vets tell me it takes 4 months after welping for everything to get back in place and for the heat to be fertile. Other than that, there is no real rule of thumb.

i have found

most will come back in 6 months after welping some 6 months regularly
we had a female we raised a litter out of this year she had pups in may was back in heat in august.

Wayne I have Julies sister Lindsay here for Jamie Coolidge to whelp a litter for him she is due in less than 2 weeks. She is bred to the Wolf Creek Deisel dog.

My old gyp comes in every 6 months weather she is bred or not. She always comes in on the 2nd or 3rd week of Wisconsin kill season... Dave
