4:30 in the **&^^$$%^%^& morning

Let Loose out yesterday morning at 4:30am to go to the bathroom, less than 5 minutes later, I opened the door to call him back in, and that ol *&()*)_)*)*_*_) was a half mile west of the house TREED.

Got in the truck and drove up there to get him, and dang if the ol counterfit didnt have a coon.

Later that day, about 5 or 6pm, I let him back out and dang if a few minutes later he wasnt casting around that same area trying to work a track out. 15 or 20 minutes later he was on the south side of that section treed. Drove around there and darn if he didnt have a coon agian. Broad daylight.

While I cant be sure it was the same coon he treed earlier that morning, he started the track very close to where I walked into him earlier.

Maybe he just has a bad history with that ringtail............bad blood between them or something.

One other weird thing, the last time I found him he was less his collar.......maybe a fence.....

He will be 7 in a couple weeks, somebody needs to explain to him the consept of RETIREMENT.

Must be the cool weather. Maybe hes trying to tell me he aint as good as he once was, but hes as good once as he ever was. LOL

He accualy does this once in awhile, just not so often as lately.
A couple weeks ago he took off and wasnt seen for a week. I was on the truck so there was nobody to drive around and listen for him the first night or two. He eventualy showed up at a neighbers house 3 miles sw of the house.

His personal record is 3 weeks, though he usualy shows back up in a day or two. Mostly because at dark I drive around untill I hear him.

His age isnt the reason I stopped hunting him. He had Rocky Mountian Spotted Fever and Erlicia a couple years ago and has been a shell of the dog he once was since. Locals remember him as having an almost erie ability to tree coons when nothing else can. I kind of wanted him remembered like that, and the dog that is isnt what once was.

The other day was a glimps of the dog that was.....I dont know maybe we do have another big hunt or two left in us.

I think hes just a little jeliouse Autumn.

Ive been working with his daughter on the bench and in the woods. I always prefered working with a young dog rather than hauling ol faithfull to the woods.

I get a kick out of watching young dogs progress, old dogs.......well there just that old dogs. They dont need the hunting time, there never going to get any better.

Just a little over a year old. Probably not only the best looking dog Ive ever bred, the best looking one Ive ever owned. Female anyway.

On a side note, the '09 World ShCh english female was sired by Loose and born right here. Same day as my female in fact, just different litter.

The female I kept is out of my ol Crank gyp, and the female that won at the world show was out of the GRNTCHGRCH Boughtons Red Ruby female we bought from Jim Ridge. They both had pups the same day.

Heck Larry, I been taking my old dog a little and he will be 13 in May. Elmo seen him comin across the yard the other night and didn't know what dog it was. Said he acted like a three year old. It is nice to hunt the younguns, but that old bawl on track and his locate still send shivers up my spine just like they did when he was five. I think I qualified him for the world the last time on his 8th birthday by winning the RQE.

I know alot of people love hunting old finished dogs, but I get bored when theres nothing left to teach them.

On the rare occasion I do hunt Loose, I can just about tell you exactly what he will be doing next by ear. When we get done hunting, I tell him its time to go and we walk back to the truck no leash in sight. Theres just nothing left for him to learn.

Give me a young pup just starting to turn on and I will hunt the pads of its feet making it a coondog.

Give me a wild coon treeing monster, and I will make it a bidable coon treeing monster.

When all thats done, Im bored and ready to go on to the next one.

When absolutly nothing in the area seems to be able to put one on the outside, I'll go back home and get the ol man and make it look easy. Its just no fun anymore unless I make it a challange for him. Kinda like the other morning and evening. It put a smile on my face remembering the good ol days when he was young. That was Loose at his best. When nothing else could he would.

Sounds like that Loose hound has quite a bit of hunt in him.

Loose

Larry please don't take this as criticizm but compare your boredom to hearing a great dog in action vs. his boredom from staying home. I too enjoy working with young dogs, not knowing what will come next in their training, laughing at them when they finally realize they have been trailing the coon backwards and come flying back past you to try to catch up. But I also knew my old Bo gave me many years of enjoyment and as long as he had the desire to hunt, I would make time to get him in the woods. At thirteen he would hunt one night and not show he wanted to go again for over a week. When he died I still wanted that "one more hunt" with him, but I know he was happy till the end. One thing i did to put more "excitement" into running him was letting youngsters go with me. I talked to the Agri teacher at the local school and he asked if anyone wanted to go and gave them my number. One night I had seven kids go from ages 12 to 17, boys and girls, all with big smiles on their face.
