Jim
Good to meet ya at the World. Hopefully we can hit the woods one day.
I didn't want to clutter up the other thread but thought I would tell you how I handle the guy that says "he's treed over there, I can hear him".
I realize that people have different ability to hear so I always think it is POSSIBLE he can hear the dog and I can't.
So what I do is this. Ok, you're on the card. Now I think I have as good a hearin as anybody but just in case we are gonna walk 50 yards (or to the top of the ridge whatever) and if I can't hear him I'm startin the 2. We ain't goin one step further either.
It's always worked out. A couple of times once I got a little closer I could indeed hear their dog treed deep, but most of the time they got minused tree cause it wasn't there and they were tryin to pull one.

I absolutely agree.
P.S. ....Look forward to taking a hunt with you sometime in the future but I gotta tell yah, it won't be in Tenn.!
Jim ,you was in TN also. What day did you go down? RIP, You have a good point always give a man benifit of doubt but, like you said after walking so far and you still don't hear the dog start the 2. I agree 100%
Jim, when I get some vacation time and have a chance to do so I have always wanted to come up and hunt in the land of Milk and Honey with you and Elvis.
Believe me this fatboy would rather walk flatground any day than mountains LOL.

How do you handle it at the end of the hunt?
I disagree with walking 50 yards and then putting the 2 on the dog.
They should ask the judge if he can hear the dog before they tree it.
If your gonna let me walk 50 yards and give me an extra 2 minutes for my dog to get treed, Ill take it every time.
I do the same thing at the end too because I figgure to be fair I have to allow for the fact that the handler may really have better hearing than me and may be telling the truth.
It's 50 yards. IMO if the dog isn't treed it's not likely to be treed where I can hear it in another few feet. If it was treed before the time was up then I want that dog to get credit, even if it beats me.

I always ask the judge if he can here my dog if I think there is going to be a question. I ask, Judge can you here my dog and if he says no then I try to get them to walk that way until he can before I ever put him on the card. By the way I know that some people let you walk while the 2 minutes is running and some don’t. What would be your reasoning for not letting me walk during the 2 min if I chose to?

Elvis, I agree with you and I learned the hard way in an AKC cast after drawing a good judge accustomed to PKC. Dogs were out of pocket and after nearly an hour of walking a ridge trying to pinpoint the dogs locations, I keyed in on my female treed deep though the country and called her treed. I thought the judge was gonna kill me and he about called me every name in the book. It took me over a year for it to sink in that he in fact was probably correct. Although I could key in on my no mouth female treed off in the distance, the judge probably felt I was pitching my dog.
The problem is, I've tried to handle the situations as you're recommending to have another handler simply call his dog or as I asked the judge "Judge, I'd like to tree my dog... do you hear him over there?" BAM! Someone trees there dog before and steals my 125 tree pts.
From now on, It really depends on the cast I draw. If I draw a cast of AKC/PKC hunters, especially the judge, I'm going to make darn sure they can hear my dog when I tree it. If I'm in a typical UKC cast, I'm taking my tree pts when my dog gives them to me because IMO 90% of the folks I'm gonna draw are not going to extend that same courtesy.
If i hear my dog you better believe it's getting treed!!!!!!!!!! You can't hear it then that's not my faulf OR maybe just Maybe you are refusing to hear it.
If you are the judge, that might work. If you are not the judge, you better hope a majority of the cast can also hear your dog because if they can't, you just ate 125-.
See I don't look at it as giving 122 minutes to that dog.
Dogs called treed during hunting time are eligible for scoring.
IMO, if there is a chance I just can't hear the dog and walking 50 feet or yards or so will help me to do that then I think that is only reasonable.
Keep in mind I have already told the handler if we don't hear him there then the 2 is being started right then so they can't wiggle out of it.
I just feel that is the most straight up way for me personally to judge it. I know that they didn't get anything over on me and I also am certian that I didn't minus a dog unjustly because my hearing wasn't as good as the handler.
99 times out of 100 the dog is takin minus cause it's just a stall tactic to try and get points at the end of the hunt, but I have heard them right where the handler said after moving a few yards on rare occasion.
